Chapter 25
In this chapter, Jessica found enjoyment in the attention and gifts showered upon her by her boss, Hank. She accepted the flowers and various tokens of affection, yet drew a firm line when it came to crossing into more intimate territory, such as kissing Hank. This decision wasn’t about preserving her chastity; rather, it was a strategic move to keep Hank longing for something he deeply desired.
Jessica had no intention of becoming a mistress; her goal was to be the rightful partner by Hank’s side. However, Hank was still tied to his long-term marriage with Liberty, whom he had been with since their college days. By the time Jessica joined the company, Liberty had stepped down from her role as the finance director to become a full-time homemaker.
Though Jessica had never met Liberty, she learned through former colleagues that Liberty had given birth to a son shortly after their marriage and had since embraced the role of a stay-at-home mom. It was rumored that Liberty had struggled with her weight after childbirth, a topic Hank had complained about more than once.
Jessica scoffed to herself, thinking, “Liberty is such a silly cow. She should have taken better care of herself even after getting married. No man will stick around for an overweight wife.”
In Jessica’s opinion, the blame lay with Liberty for neglecting self-care, which turned Hank away from her. Jessica believed that if Liberty had been more mindful of her spending habits, Hank could have invested more in Jessica instead.
Hank expressed his disdain for Liberty, stating, “She’s a pig! I feel sick to my stomach every time I look at her. I would’ve divorced her a long time ago if it weren’t for our son.”
In contrast, Serenity, another woman in the picture, had a lovely figure and was both younger and more attractive than Liberty. Despite her humble beginnings in a rural area, Serenity carried herself with an elegance that made her stand out, especially compared to Liberty.
Of course, Liberty had her own charm in her earlier days, but the extra weight had diminished that allure.
Liberty was completely unaware of her husband’s little secret—his affair with his secretary. Ever since she learned of the secretary’s existence, she paid no mind to the sweet voice she occasionally heard on the other end of the line. As she placed her son back in the stroller, Liberty started to move forward, lost in her thoughts.
With her mind wandering, she accidentally collided the stroller into a parked Maybach.
The luxury vehicle suffered only a minor scratch, but when Liberty noticed the emblem, panic set in.
Just then, the owner of the car arrived at the scene, approaching them quickly.
“I’m so sorry, Mister. I really apologize,” Liberty repeated, flustered.
The man, appearing to be in his mid-thirties, was dressed in black and had an appealing face. However, the scar running down the right side of his face gave him a somewhat intimidating presence. Liberty’s son, Sonny, felt frightened and instinctively turned to his mother for comfort.
The scar-faced man inspected his car before turning back to Liberty and her child. Despite his obvious annoyance, he maintained his composure and didn’t lash out. “Leave me your contact number. I’ll need to claim the repair and repaint costs,” he said in a somber tone.
“I’m really sorry, Mister,” Liberty responded again.
After a brief silence, the man added, “Accidents happen, but an apology doesn’t mend anything. Be more careful next time. You can cover the damages to my car, but what if something were to happen to your child?”
“I completely understand. It’s my fault, and I will be more cautious moving forward,” Liberty replied, acknowledging her mistake.
She took out her phone and said, “Could you please give me your number? I’ll call you to save your contact, and I’ll take care of the repairs for your car.”
The scar-faced man provided her with his contact number.
