Chapter 3411
“Alright, I’ll take the eldest young lady out for a meal when I have some free time another day,” Carrie said.
She stood at the door, smiling as she watched Serenity and the others leave.
After a moment, she walked inside but soon came back out.
Her brief entry was merely for appearances.
She was there because Mr. Labbe had received news that a prominent figure had arrived in Wiltspoon and had connections with several major families in the area.
Serenity and Audrey had arranged to meet Mrs. Lewis there, and upon learning this, Mr. Labbe quickly organized for Carrie to come over.
Despite not having fully recovered from her miscarriage, Carrie changed her appearance and rushed over with two bodyguards, but she was still a bit late, as Serenity and the others had already departed.
Once she got into the car, Carrie called Mr. Labbe. After he answered, she said, “Mr. Labbe, I wasn’t able to find out who it was. By the time I arrived, Serenity and the others were just leaving. With Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Lewis there, I didn’t feel it was right to ask any questions.”
Even if the two ladies hadn’t been present, it would have been challenging for her to extract any information from Serenity.
After numerous encounters, Mrs. Labbe had become acquainted with Serenity.
While Serenity had a positive attitude towards her, they were not friends.
In fact, rather than becoming close friends, Serenity and Camryn had not dismissed their suspicions and continued to associate her with Carrie.
The only way to eliminate Serenity and Camryn’s doubts would be to create a fake Carrie and have both her and the impersonator appear before Serenity at the same time.
“What are Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Lewis doing?”
“together?”
Since Mr. Labbe took an indirect route in his pursuit of a breakthrough in Wiltspoon, he needed to thoroughly understand all the prominent wealthy families in the area.
Before Serenity married Zachary, there was tension between the Lewis family and the Stone family. The Lewis family had a strong friendship with the York family, while the Stone family was a business rival and adversary of the York family. This dynamic created friction between the Lewis and Stone families.
However, the relationship between the two families improved because Serenity’s biological mother was the younger sister that Audrey had been searching for for decades, making Serenity Audrey’s niece. This familial connection eased tensions between the York and Stone families and encouraged interaction between the Stone and Lewis families.
Carrie remarked sarcastically and with jealousy, “What else could it be? It must be to discuss the marriage between Liberty and Duncan. Duncan is blind! With so many young and beautiful women available, he insists on Liberty, a divorced woman with a child. I’ve never seen anyone so eager to be someone else’s stepfather. With Duncan’s status, what woman could he not have?”
“What is so appealing about Liberty? When Duncan met her, she was still overweight, tipping the scales at 200 pounds. She was so unattractive that her husband couldn’t bear to stay with her and found a mistress instead, leading to their divorce. Liberty relied on her sister to marry into the York family and used the family’s influence to suppress and bully her ex-husband’s family.”
Liberty and Duncan’s love story was the talk of the town, particularly because Liberty was a divorced woman. Despite her successful weight loss and return to her former appearance, she still drew attention.
Jealousy.
Many unmarried girls struggled to marry into wealthy families and attain the status of a lady, yet Liberty, a divorced woman, managed to do so.
This situation breeds feelings of envy, jealousy, and animosity.
Carrie always believed that Liberty had orchestrated this scenario in advance and had lured Duncan into her web.
Watching Liberty’s younger sister, Serenity, marry into affluence and live as the eldest lady filled Carrie with envy, prompting her to set her sights on Duncan.
