An Understated Dominance - Chapter 147
When Tina and her friends left, the Nicholsons were still in shock. They couldn’t believe that the proud young woman from the Hummer family had not only forgiven them for their mistakes but had also come to apologize in person after they had fought.
It was hard to wrap their heads around!
“What’s going on with the Hummers today? Who knew they could be so humble?” one of them said.
“I know, right? If I hadn’t pinched myself, I would have thought I was dreaming!” another added.
“Maybe Ms. Hummer really realized she was wrong, and that’s why she came to apologize in person?” someone suggested.
“Nonsense! You’re giving the Hummer family too much credit!” another replied.
The Nicholsons began to chatter excitedly, and it seemed like the conversation would go on for a while.
“Could this be Dustin’s doing?” Julle wondered, looking suspicious. She felt uneasy.
Ever since the fight the night before, Dustin had been unusually calm, as if he knew everything was going according to plan. Either he was fully aware of what was happening, or he was very good at hiding his feelings.
But when she thought about how he had been married to his cousin for three years without achieving much, it was hard to believe he was the one who had brought the Hummers down.
Just then, Matt Laney walked into the room, looking sharp in his nice clothes.
“Hey, everyone’s here! Perfect timing. I have great news—the Hummer’s ban has officially been lifted!” Matt announced with a big smile.
“I get it now! So everything that just happened was because of you, right Matt?” Florence asked.
Matt looked around, trying to understand what was happening. It seemed like everyone else was excited, but he was lost.
“What’s going on? What just happened?” he asked, feeling confused.
James suddenly snapped back to reality and exclaimed, “That’s right! I can’t believe I forgot that we still have Matt here with us!”
Florence jumped in, her face lighting up. “No wonder the Hummer family apologized to us! It was because Matt was helping us behind the scenes!”
Everyone in the Nicholson family started to look amazed.
“So, the Hummers apologized because of Matt!” they all realized together.
Matt was still trying to catch up. “You don’t have to keep anything from me anymore, right?” he said, feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Florence smiled at him. “We all saw what you did. If it weren’t for you, Ms. Hummer wouldn’t have come to apologize!”
Matt was stunned. “She apologized?” he repeated, his heart racing. He knew how tough Tina Hummer could be, and the idea of her coming to apologize was surprising.
“Yes, Matt! You didn’t just help us through tough times; you amazed our whole family!” James said, brimming with excitement.
The rest of the Nicholsons cheered, “Thank you, Mr. Laney! You saved our family!” They reached out to shake his hand, full of gratitude.
Matt, still a little dazed, managed to smile. “Um—there’s no need…” he started, but he quickly realized how much their appreciation meant to him.
“Thank you for being so polite, everyone. It was really easy to handle; I didn’t do much,” Matt said with a smile.
Even though he wasn’t sure why everyone was so thankful, he felt it was best to accept the Nicholsons’ gratitude. After all, who would refuse kindness?
“You’re too humble, Matt! If it weren’t for you, the Nicholsons might have been in big trouble!” James continued to praise him.
“Really, this is nothing,” Matt said, shaking his head with a grin. His modesty deserved praise.
“Rhys, you got lucky this time! I can’t believe you got away with this! What are you waiting for? Hurry up and thank Matt!” Florence shouted, glaring at Dustin.
“Bow down to thank him? Why should I?” Dustin replied, rolling his eyes.
“Don’t be ungrateful! You caused all this trouble in the first place. If it weren’t for Matt, you wouldn’t even be standing here right now!” Florence shot back.
“That’s right! If it wasn’t for Matt, you’d be in serious trouble for what you did!” James added.
“You guys give Matt too much credit. He’s not as great as you think,” Dustin said coldly.
He was surprised at how they praised Matt without knowing the whole story. And worst of all, Matt just stood there, accepting it all.
“Are you saying you’re better than Matt? Take a look in the mirror and think about it!” Florence challenged.
who you are?”
“Yeah! People like you just know how to stir up trouble!”
“It’s hard to believe there are people who can be so heartless! Not only did he not thank his savior, but he also insulted him! How disgusting!”
The Nicholsons were frustrated with Dustin. They truly disliked people like him who turned kindness into negativity.
“Is it really so hard for you to just say thank you, Dustin? If it weren’t for Matt, you might not even be here right now!” Dahlia spoke up suddenly.
To her, Dustin was still being stubborn. What was a simple thank you compared to Matt saving his life?
“I would have thanked him if he actually helped me. But he didn’t! In fact, he’s the one who started all this trouble!” Dustin replied flatly.
“What do you mean?” Dahlia frowned.
“I did a background check and found out that Matt and Tina are together. Tina targeted you out of jealousy, thinking you and Matt were involved. That’s what led to the attack! In short, he’s the real troublemaker!” Dustin said firmly.
“That’s nonsense! Rhys! No offense, but Matt is a good guy. He’s not as bad as you say he is!” Florence shouted, standing up without waiting for Matt to say anything.
“Exactly! You’re just jealous! You probably planted evidence to make him look bad because he’s better than you!” James added, scolding Dustin.
“Oh, Dustin. I never knew you could be so low!” the Nicholsons scoffed.
“Why do you always cause chaos, Dustin? Can’t you be more mature and sensible?”
“Once?” Dahlia said, her voice filled with anger.
It was clear to her that his actions were driven by jealousy.
“Don’t believe me? Just ask Julie. She saw everything last night!” Dustin said, trying to defend himself as he pointed at something.
Everyone turned their attention to where he was pointing.
