An Understated Dominance - Chapter 217
“Did it go well, Dad? Is anyone going to help us?” Matt asked nervously.
“Forget those people! They come around when they need something from me, calling themselves my friends. But when they hear our family is in trouble, they run away! They’re all fakes!” Phineas’s face twisted in anger. He never imagined that he, the head of the Laney family, would find himself in this situation.
“Dad, everyone says that tough times show you who your real friends are. Let’s stop associating with them. I’ll make them regret their choice once we get through this,” Matt promised.
“Matt, I can’t rely on my contacts anymore. You’re the only one I trust,” Phineas said, suddenly remembering someone. “Aren’t you close with Edwin Hummer’s daughter? Why don’t you call her and see if she can help us with some money?”
“Oh, right! The daughter of the richest man in Swinton should be able to lend us three billion dollars without a problem. I’ll call her now,” Matt replied.
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
“Well, well. If it isn’t Mr. Laney! What a surprise to hear from you!” a voice said on the other end.
“Don’t say that, Tina. I’ve just been really busy with work. I called as soon as I had a moment,” Matt replied, smiling. He knew how to charm women.
“Hmm! At least you remembered to call. So, what’s going on?” Tina asked, curious.
“Because I miss you, of course! What else would it be?” Matt teased.
Tina laughed lightly but didn’t buy it. “Right. I’m hanging up if you don’t get to the point.”
“Wait, wait. I really do have a favor to ask,” Matt said, clearing his throat. “My business is facing some financial issues, and we need some help to get back on track. Would you be interested in investing?”
“How much do you need?”
Tina asked, “How much do you need?”
“Not much. About three billion dollars,” Matt replied with a smile.
“Three billion isn’t a lot? You’re joking, right?” Tina’s voice rose in surprise.
“To some, it might seem like a lot. But you’re the daughter of the Hummer family, the most beautiful and talented woman in Swinton. Three billion isn’t much for someone like you,” Matt explained.
Tina felt flattered. After all, everyone loves to hear their partner say nice things about them.
“I can get you the money, but you have to tell me why you need it,” Tina said firmly.
“To be honest, someone messed up our finances, and I suspect the Harmon family is behind it,” Matt admitted.
“You’ve always kept your distance from the Harmon family. Why would they do this to you?” Tina asked, intrigued.
“Because of Dustin Rhys!” Matt replied.
Tina’s eyes widened. “What? You threatened that crazy guy?”
“Yes! That jerk tried to embarrass my family, so I had to teach him a lesson. I’ll take down his family with your help!” Matt said angrily.
“Are you crazy? Why would you want to provoke him?” Tina exclaimed.
“Why are you so scared? He’s just a country bumpkin. I can handle him,” Matt said confidently.
“Not a chance! Don’t involve me in your reckless plan!” Tina said, and then she hung up the phone.
