An Understated Dominance - Chapter 2498
Chapter 2498
“Damn it!” Warrick shouted, frustration clear in his voice. “I was just getting started.”
He was covered in blood, and a wild, excited look sparkled in his eyes. Warrick thrived on the thrill of the fight. After hiding for two days, he was eager to let loose, and now that he had, he didn’t want to stop.
“Sir Prescott, we need to think about the bigger picture. If we don’t leave now, it’ll be too late,” Mulder said, gripping Warrick’s arm. In the distance, dark figures were rushing toward them down the street.
Though Warrick hesitated for a moment, he quickly calmed down. “Fall back!” he shouted.

With that, he and Mulder dashed past the checkpoint, leading a small group of weary soldiers into the outer city.
The outer city was less protected than the inner city. Its vastness made it impossible to guard every area, so only the main roads had a strong military presence.
Mulder had already planned their escape route and gathered their gear. The original plan was to leave the inner city by car for a smooth getaway. But if they couldn’t get out or if they attracted too much attention, they would have to rely on the backup plan—the secret tunnels.
The Hall of Gods had secretly dug several underground tunnels in the outer city, connecting the inner city to the outside. These tunnels were crucial and were rarely used unless absolutely necessary. In times of war, they could turn the tide of battle.
As a core member of the Hall of Gods, Mulder had hoped not to use the secret tunnels for their escape, as doing so could expose them. But after the chaos just…
Now, he had no choice. At that moment, survival was all that mattered.
Following Mulder’s lead, the group raced through the dark streets. After about half an hour, they arrived at an ordinary-looking house. They quickly entered, cleaned off the bloodstains, and changed into fresh clothes.
After a few moments in the hideout, Mulder signaled for them to move. They slipped out quietly and headed into Central Village.
The area was a chaotic mix of old, rundown buildings packed closely together. Narrow alleys and winding streets could easily confuse anyone who wasn’t familiar with them.
Mulder clearly knew this place well. He navigated the maze of alleys and paths with ease. Warrick soon felt dizzy and completely lost. Just when he was about to lose his patience, Mulder suddenly turned into a small Strequan-style house with a courtyard.
The others followed him without hesitation.
Once inside, Mulder walked into the living room and lifted the rug under the coffee table, revealing a hidden trapdoor. He hooked his fingers into the openings, gave a strong pull, and opened it.
The trapdoor creaked open, showing a dark passage leading underground. Standing at the entrance, they felt a cool breeze coming from the tunnel.
“Sir Prescott, after you,” Mulder said, gesturing toward the tunnel.
“You go first,” Warrick replied, peering into the darkness. It was pitch-black, and he couldn’t see anything.
“You’re as cautious as ever, Sir Prescott,” Mulder said with a slight smile. Without hesitation, he stepped into the darkness.
Warrick followed closely behind, his senses on high alert. They might be allies for now, but that didn’t mean he fully trusted them.
Warrick didn’t fully trust Mulder. He knew that being cautious was wise, while being reckless could lead to disaster. He wasn’t going to risk his life with someone he barely knew.
Outside the city, many patrol squads were searching for Warrick and the others.
Axel hurried to the scene with his best troops as soon as he heard the news. He was eager to make up for his earlier mistakes.
As he looked at the blood-soaked ground filled with bodies, he frowned and approached a guard who was only slightly injured.
“What happened? How did Warrick get here?” Axel demanded.
The inner city was locked down. Warrick should have been trapped, and it was only a matter of time before they found him. Axel couldn’t understand how Warrick had crossed a hundred miles to appear right at the border of the inner and outer city.
“It was Mr. Mulder Frank,” the guard said, his face twisted with grief and anger. “He betrayed us. He led the rebels through the checkpoint and killed more than half of our men.”
“What? Mulder?” Axel’s face darkened. “Are you sure?”
“I’m certain,” the guard replied through clenched teeth. “That guy’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I’d recognize him even if he turned to dust.”
“How could this happen?” Axel frowned, feeling a chill run down his spine.
Mulder was Axel’s brother-in-law and an officer in the City Defenders. He was ambitious, responsible, and had no known flaws. That was why Axel had felt good about marrying his sister to him. But now, he never imagined Mulder could be a traitor. If word of this got out…
When they arrived in Austin, no matter how much Axel tried to explain, it just wouldn’t make sense.
