An Understated Dominance - Chapter 62
“Who dares to cause trouble on my turf? Do they want to die?” Mason Zims shouted, strutting confidently with a cigar in his mouth.
People quickly scattered as he walked by, all too scared to confront him. Even Dahlia’s face turned serious when she saw him approaching.
Though Trevor Spanner was dead, Mason had taken over his power and was thriving. With Edwin Hummer backing him up, few dared to cross him.
“You need to escape through the side door. I’ll cover for you!” Dahlia said as she stepped in front of Dustin. She was an important figure, and while Mason was unpredictable, she knew he wouldn’t dare act against her. But Dustin wasn’t in the same position; without any power, he could easily end up dead or hurt if Mason got to him.
“You want him to escape? Where can he go? As long as Sir Zims is around, even if Jesus himself came down, he wouldn’t be able to save you! Your death is certain!” Mr. Chansey huffed as he swaggered over to Mason. “You’ve finally arrived, Sir Zims! Just look at my face. It’s a mess!” he complained.
“What happened?” Mason asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, here’s the story,” Mr. Chansey began, his voice dripping with deceit. “A woman came to me for a loan, but when I saw her bad credit, I said no. She got angry and started flirting with other men. I didn’t fall for her tricks, and she beat me up! Can you believe it?”
“Oh, she sounds feisty. Did you mention my name?” Mason snapped, clearly not in a friendly mood.
“Of course I did! But they—”
Mr. Chansey leaned in and said, “He didn’t even flinch when he heard your name! He even said he’d fight you if you showed up!”
Mason laughed, a wicked grin on his face. “Great! I need to show people that I still have power! I just took over the Drey Group, and I can’t let anyone think I’m weak.”
He was eager for some bold people to challenge him today.
Dahlia, who had been quiet for too long, finally spoke up. “That’s ridiculous!” She stepped forward, her voice firm. “Sir Zims, I asked him for a loan, but he refused and made things hard for me! All those claims about me seducing him and messing with other men are complete lies. He was lying the whole time!”
Before she could finish, Mason waved his hand to silence her. “Why should I care about the truth? I don’t care who’s right or wrong. You started a fight on my turf, which disrespects me! Anyone who disrespects me, whether it’s Tom, Dick, or Harry, will have to kneel and beg for forgiveness.”
Dahlia frowned, surprised by his unreasonable response.
Mr. Chansey chuckled, “Didn’t you hear him? Kneel down and beg for your life!”
He knew Mason well enough to feel confident in his taunting.
Mason twirled a knife in his hand, his eyes gleaming with determination. “Now tell me, who was the man who hit you? Let’s see if he can leave here without getting hurt!”
“Sir Zims, he’s the little jerk who beat me up!” Mr. Chansey exclaimed, pointing a finger dramatically.
Mason, chewing on a cigar, turned to see who was causing the commotion. When his eyes landed on Dustin, it felt like lightning struck him. He froze in place, completely shocked. The knife he had been holding slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor.
“Oh no, why him of all people?!” Mason thought, panic rising within him. Just seeing Dustin’s face made his body tense up. Cold sweat dripped down his forehead, and his legs started to wobble.
Mason couldn’t shake the memory of Dustin singlehandedly destroying an entire building. It haunted him, giving him nightmares even now. The recent news about Travis Spanner’s disappearance and the destruction of Spanner Villa just two days ago made him even more fearful. He knew Dustin was behind it. Somehow, he managed to make someone as powerful as Travis Spanner vanish without a trace overnight. That made it clear just how dangerous Dustin was.
“Damn it! Why did that idiot drag me into this?” Mason mumbled to himself.
“Weren’t you just barking like a mad dog? Why are you quiet now that Sir Zims is here?” Mr. Chansey taunted Dustin, oblivious to the tension in the room. “Let’s see if you dare to slap me again. I’ll make sure you regret it!”
As Mr. Chansey spoke, Mason saw his chance to redeem himself. He rushed forward, ready to slap the…
the living daylights knocked out of Chansey!
A loud crunch echoed, and Mr. Chansey staggered, looking like he might fall over at any moment. A clear red handprint was visible on his face.
“Sir Zims? A–aren’t you beating up the wrong person right now?” Mr. Chansey mumbled, trying to cover his shocked expression with his hands.
“Me, beating up the wrong guy? But you’re the one I’m supposed to beat up!” Mason shouted angrily. Without hesitating, he slapped Chansey a few more times and then threw him to the ground.
Mason’s rage didn’t stop there; he began to punch and kick Chansey again, shouting insults as he did.
“You fat pig! I feel sick every time I see you! What does someone as beautiful as Ms. Nicholson see in you? Do you even look at yourself?! How dare you spread my name like that! How dare you make a fool out of me! I’ll make sure you regret this!”
With each insult, Mason hit harder, and soon Mr. Chansey was crying like a child, screaming for his parents while covering his head and begging for mercy.
“What the hell is going on here?” someone whispered from the crowd.
The sudden change shocked everyone. No one expected Mason, who had come in like a whirlwind just moments before, to turn on his own teammate. Why was he attacking Chansey instead of supporting him?
“Um…” Dahlia said, her eyes wide with disbelief. She couldn’t believe Mason’s sudden change in behavior.
“Just a moment ago, he was strutting around like he owned the place, acting so tough, and now he’s…”
Mason had a halo over his head and was trying to act like a saint. But she could see the fear in his eyes.
That confused her. How could someone who had just killed someone as powerful as Sir Spanner still be afraid?
As she looked around the room, her eyes settled on Dustin. It struck her that Mason’s change in behavior might be linked to his meeting with Dustin.
Could it be that Mason was actually scared of Dustin?
