An Understated Dominance - Chapter 81

Dr. Cross was a well-known figure in medicine. Even people in South City knew about his impressive work. He was as respected as Dr. Watkinds and Dr. Peay, who were already at the top of their field. Dr. Cross’s skills were so exceptional that they seemed perfect. This meant that Dr. Leister, his apprentice, must be quite talented too!
“Can you really get him to look at Granddad?” Dahlia asked, her voice filled with hope. Dr. Cross was her grandfather’s best chance.
“He’s my friend. He’ll come if I ask him to,” Matt replied with a nod.
“That’s amazing! If Old Mr. Nicholson gets better, the Nicholson family will owe you!” Dahlia exclaimed.
Everyone agreed with her.

“This is nothing. Let me ask him,” Matt said with a smile as he walked out of the room.
Just then, Dustin walked in, but he was immediately confronted by Florence.
“What are you doing here, Rhys?” she snapped.
“I heard that Granddad’s sick. I came to visit him,” Dustin replied, looking serious.
“Visit him? Who do you think you are? You’re not my son-in-law anymore. You’re not welcome here!” Florence said, glaring at him.
Dahlia rushed over when she heard the argument. “What’s going on, Mom?”
“This guy is pretending to care and wants to see your grandfather. He probably knows your grandpa doesn’t have much time left, and he’s here to try and get a piece of the family fortune!” Florence accused.
Everyone in the Nicholson family knew that Henry Nicholson had always treated Dustin like a grandson. It wouldn’t be surprising if the old man left him something in his will.
“You’ve got it all wrong. I’m just worried about Granddad,” Dustin said.
Still suspicious, Florence scoffed, “Who knows what you really want?”
“Mom, just let him in. He’s showing love for Granddad,” Dahlia interjected.
“Dahlia, this kid—”
“I’ll take responsibility if something happens,” Dahlia replied confidently.
Florence was about to argue but decided against it and stepped aside with a sigh.
“Thank you,” Dustin said, nodding gratefully before entering the ward.
Inside, the old man, Henry, looked pale and frail, as if he had just suffered a stroke.
Dustin reached out to take Henry’s hand and was surprised to feel a mix of coldness on the outside and extreme heat beneath the skin.
“The Flaming Frost Poison?” Dustin thought, narrowing his eyes as he considered treatment options.
This poison causes strange symptoms: the outside feels icy while the inside burns with heat. Trying to treat either symptom could make things worse, which explained why the doctors had been unable to help Henry.
“Dahlia, bring me some hot water,” Dustin instructed.
“Hot water? Why do you need that?” Dahlia asked, confused.
“Granddad is weak, and he doesn’t have much time. I need to help him now,” he said seriously.
“You?” Dahlia frowned. “What are you talking about? Do you even know anything about medicine?”
“A little,” Dustin replied.
“And you think you can handle this? What are you even thinking?” Dahlia was clearly irritated. This was a matter of life and death, not a game!
“Rhys, do you even realize what you’re saying? How do you expect to cure him? Are you ready to take the blame if something goes wrong?” Florence scolded.
“Exactly! Old Mr. Nicholson is already suffering, so why add to the problem? Just stay out of it!”
Everyone was unhappy with Dustin. They saw him as a self-centered troublemaker. How could a mediocre office worker, who had been fired and hadn’t done anything impressive in three years, think he could cure diseases and save lives?
“If I say it out loud, it means I believe I can cure him. Just let me try,” Dustin said firmly.
“Dustin, stop joking around!” Dahlia shouted. “You’re not a doctor or trained in medicine. How can you claim you can save him? I let you visit Grandpa, not to brag!”
“Can you just trust me this once?” Dustin asked, feeling frustrated. If he didn’t believe he could help, he wouldn’t interfere with Henry’s life.
“This isn’t about trust. The truth is, you can’t do it. I won’t let you mess with Granddad’s life!” Dahlia refused sharply.
After three years of marriage, they knew each other very well. Dahlia couldn’t really know if Dustin could succeed.
