Chapter 107
Zachary tightened his facial muscles, casting a warning glance at Serenity.
“Mr. York,” Serenity inquired playfully, “Can I kiss you?”
Zachary was taken aback.
Did she really have no sense of propriety?
How could she boldly ask a man such a question?
“Your smile is stunning. It completely took my breath away. I just want to hold you and express my feelings.”
“Serenity, you certainly have some nerve.”
“My cheeks are right here,” she replied, playfully slapping her face as Zachary winced at her antics.
“I only mentioned that because we’re married. I mean, we are legally married, so a kiss isn’t exactly a crime.”
As Zachary took a couple of steps back, Serenity burst into laughter at his instinctive retreat.
He was clearly flustered.
But she had to admit, she was partly responsible for his reaction; after all, the last time she had touched his face out of the blue.
As her laughter reached a crescendo, Zachary suddenly closed the distance, scooping her into his arms. He leaned in and kissed her, effectively silencing her giggles. Serenity’s laughter came to an abrupt halt.
Surprised, Serenity’s eyes widened as she gazed at his face, now so close to hers.
She had only been teasing him because she found his smile beautiful. It was fun to poke fun at him since, when it came to romantic intimacy, he was a complete novice compared to her. It hadn’t crossed her mind that Zachary would take her words to heart.
He had acted on her playful invitation and kissed her.
Zachary pressed his lips against hers, merely to quell her teasing laughter. He didn’t linger or explore her lips; instead, he released her and stepped back.
With a flick of his finger, he playfully tapped her on the forehead. Serenity yelped in mock pain.
“That’s what you get for being so cheeky,” Zachary said, a hint of amusement in his voice.
With a raspy voice, Zachary effortlessly settled at the table and began to enjoy his breakfast, as if nothing had occurred. Serenity, however, was left in stunned silence.
Running her fingers across her lips, she observed her husband, who was now focused on his meal with an unreadable expression. Who was the true victor in this game? It was apparent that she had been bested.
The scare Serenity experienced was significant. Zachary, having snatched a last-minute victory, radiated happiness like the sun shining in the sky as he savored his food. In the game of love, he realized that shamelessness was key to winning.
He had outsmarted her, as she wasn’t on the same level. Lacking the courage to retaliate with another kiss, Serenity shyly took a seat across from him, shooting him an annoyed glare.
Zachary found her reaction amusing. He had assumed Serenity, with her past relationship experiences, would have the upper hand. But it turned out she was just as inexperienced as he was.
When they signed their marriage papers, Serenity had mentioned a previous relationship from eight years ago, likely her first love—an experience often filled with innocence and purity. In essence, both Serenity and Zachary were like blank slates.
“Why did you make such a grand breakfast today? Is it your way of thanking me for yesterday?” she inquired.
“Absolutely, Captain Obvious,” Zachary replied with a grin as he loaded his plate with food. “I was looking out for both of us. You’re my wife, after all. It wouldn’t reflect well on me if anything happened to you. But I’m glad you’re appreciative; I enjoyed this breakfast thoroughly.”
