Chapter 155
What is the purpose of marriage if the husband cannot support his wife? He might as well marry a family member instead.
“Besides, it’s not like my sister does nothing. Mrs. Brown, you work tirelessly at your daughter’s house. Do you think managing a home is easy?”
Mrs. Brown opened her mouth, but no words came out.
She and her husband handled household chores, cared for the little ones, and helped the kids with their homework at their daughter’s place. To be honest, it was far from simple. It was quite frustrating, especially with young children around. The kids, oblivious to the chaos they created, were mischievous and made a mess.
Mrs. Brown could be tidying up in one corner while the kids were scattering toys in another. The young ones often cried and rolled on the floor, fussing over trivial matters. Caring for toddlers was incredibly challenging. Truthfully, Mrs. Brown would prefer a cleaning job over babysitting and managing a household if she didn’t feel a sense of duty toward her daughter.
“Mrs. Brown, don’t pretend not to understand. You can’t expect my sister to give everything unconditionally when you know how demanding that is. What leads you to believe my sister has it easy? Marriage requires effort from both partners; it’s about give and take. It’s unreasonable for my sister to do all the giving while Hank just takes.”
“As I said, if you don’t think my sister is good enough for you, you can send her back to me. I can support her, but you cannot lay a hand on my sister. I’m willing to overlook this incident since my sister stood up for herself this time, but I won’t be so forgiving next time. By the way, you should know that I practice self-defense, so I know how to hit where it hurts the most. You can disregard my warning if you think Hank can handle the consequences.”
Serenity would not let up until Hank…
She could have ended up in the hospital if she had been fighting Hank! Hank should reconsider before raising a hand to her sister again. “Do you really think anyone would want your sister after she leaves Hank? She’s lazy, overweight, and a glutton. Hank can hardly stand to look at her. Ha! A divorce? Not even a senior citizen would want her once she becomes a divorcee.”
“Chelsea!” Mrs. Brown exclaimed, delivering a slap to her daughter’s face.
With Serenity glaring at her, Chelsea shrank back and ceased her chatter. Yet, nothing could prevent the thoughts from swirling in her mind.
“Serenity, Chelsea was just speaking thoughtlessly. We certainly don’t want to consider divorce; reconciliation is far better for the couple. Discussing divorce is hurtful, especially since Sonny is still young. He shouldn’t have to grow up in a broken family.”
“Yes, you’re right. Hank is at fault here too. He shouldn’t have struck your sister, no matter how angry he was. Couples shouldn’t go to bed angry. Tell your sister to come over and bring your brother-in-law with her. They need to sort things out instead of constantly fighting.”
