Chapter 16
In the Wiltspoon business community, gaining the favor of Zachary meant that doors would open wide, and opportunities would abound.
Mr. and Mrs. Lowe decided to bring their son to the dinner party, hoping he would connect with people and forge friendships that would serve as a foundation for his future.
“Mr. Lowe, you were…”
“I was just walking my family to catch a ride,” Mr. Lowe interjected.
Before Zachary could finish his thought, Shawn quickly stepped in to clarify his presence, wanting to ensure that Zachary didn’t misinterpret his hesitation to engage in these social gatherings or his dissatisfaction with the hotel’s service.
The Wiltspoon Hotel was among the many establishments operated by the York family.
“Oh,” Zachary replied, brushing past Shawn as if his acknowledgment was merely a matter of courtesy.
In an instant, Shawn felt invisible as a throng of people flocked around Zachary, leaving him feeling like a mere shadow.
It was a common occurrence for Zachary to make a fleeting appearance at events before disappearing again.
The CEOs present were secretly relieved to have seized the opportunity to discuss business with Zachary, grateful for their quick thinking and decisive actions.
Before long, a Rolls Royce with the license plate XX8888, flanked by security vehicles, departed from the Wiltspoon Hotel.
“Where to, Mr. Zachary?” the driver inquired from behind the wheel.
Zachary glanced at his watch, noting it was only half past nine. Since the night was still young, he considered his options and replied, “To Brynfield.”
“Understood,” the driver acknowledged.
To Zachary’s surprise, he arrived home before Serenity.
Back at his cold, empty house, Zachary sank into the sofa, idly watching television as he waited for his wife, who had yet to return despite leaving the hotel earlier.
The bodyguard…
Zachary had received a series of photos from the party, each one capturing Serenity’s every move. As he scrolled through the images, he noticed that she was indulging in food as if she hadn’t eaten in ages. Yet, he found some relief in the fact that she chose to hide in a corner to eat rather than flirt with other men.
He frowned at her choice of attire. Serenity was clearly underdressed, opting not to wear an evening gown. Had she shown up at the ball looking her best, he would have had no choice but to lock her out of the house.
Aside from Shawn, who was the cousin of her best friend, Serenity didn’t seem to interact with any other men. It made sense since they were likely already acquainted.
Zachary’s gaze lingered on one particular photograph, his lips pursed in contemplation. As he examined the picture more closely, he noticed Shawn casting a sidelong glance at Serenity. With his keen observational skills as the head of York Corporation, Zachary was quick to pick up on the nuances of the image.
It dawned on him: Shawn had feelings for Serenity! The realization struck him hard—he had a rival in matters of the heart.
Just then, he heard a click from the door lock. Quickly, he shoved his phone into his pocket, diverting his attention.
Serenity entered the house, locking the door behind her. She spotted Zachary lounging on the sofa, engrossed in the TV. While securing the door, she asked casually, “Are you not working late tonight, Mr. York?”
