Chapter 168
Jasmine pursed her lips. “He’s a bit unattractive. I’m worried that if I marry an ugly man, my baby might end up looking hideous. Your situation is ideal. Since you and your husbands are good-looking, your baby will likely be beautiful.”
She would prefer to marry a hardworking wage earner like her best friend. So what if Mr. York wasn’t born into wealth? He worked diligently to achieve a senior white-collar position at York Corporation.
Anyone who can enter the York Corporation’s headquarters is truly among the elite.
After a brief pause, Serenity replied, “You should spend less time on your romance novels. I think you’ve read too much and now imagine yourself meeting a young, handsome, and wealthy CEO like the female characters in your books. The young CEO only has eyes for the leading lady. Jasmine, that’s all fiction. Where will you find that many young CEOs in real life?”
“The CEO of York Corporation is young, but he inherited a long-established family business. How can other men compete with someone born into privilege? You know that meeting a CEO like Mr. York is impossible, let alone trying to win him over.”
Jasmine opened her mouth to defend her perspective, but no words came out.
She had nothing to say.
Everyone would love to be the leading lady in a romance novel.
Still, Jasmine wasn’t trying to snag a big-shot CEO. That type of man didn’t attract her.
“Seren, please go with me one more time.”
“Not happening.”
“Are we still friends, Seren?”
Serenity didn’t bother to lift her head. “We are.”
“Shouldn’t you help a friend in need?”
“I’ll help you when you truly need it, but you’re going on a blind date. Don’t expect me to rescue you from an innocent.”
“Please, Seren, just this once. I promise it’s a one-time thing. Think about the food!” Jasmine pleaded.
“Our lunch from the Wiltspoon Hotel today was delicious,” Serenity replied.
Seeing that her best friend wouldn’t stop begging, Serenity decided to pull out the big guns. “I’m going on a date with my guy to bond.”
Jasmine was left speechless.
It didn’t escape Serenity’s notice that Jasmine wore a forlorn expression throughout the afternoon. Serenity steeled herself against her best friend’s resentful gaze as she declined to accompany Jasmine to yet another event.
Since Zachary wouldn’t be home early due to a business commitment, Serenity remained at the shop while telling Jasmine to leave work early. Unable to convince her best friend, Jasmine reluctantly grabbed her purse and headed home.
Left alone at the shop with little to do, Serenity called her sister, only to discover that her brother-in-law still hadn’t returned. Serenity sighed; it seemed likely that her sister’s marriage wouldn’t last much longer. Although she didn’t wish for Liberty and Hank to reconcile, Serenity felt concern for her nephew. Children are always the most affected by their parents’ separation.
Sonny was only two years old and had always been in Liberty’s care. Her sister would have a better chance of winning custody if she had a reliable source of income.
