Chapter 172
Zachary was only thirty years old. How could that be considered old?
Serenity had mentioned multiple times that he was a middle-aged man.
Zachary credited his meditation practice for keeping him composed, as Serenity’s remarks could have been hurtful enough to risk his composure.
“My boss isn’t old. He’s not middle-aged!” Zachary asserted, gathering himself. Serenity looked at him quizzically. “I thought you said you’ve never met your boss. How do you know he isn’t middle-aged? Do you really think someone young can manage a massive company like York Corporation? Although the business world isn’t my area of expertise, I understand how significant York Corporation is in Wiltspoon. It’s in direct competition with that other firm, & Co., in Annenburg.”
Zachary responded after a mock eye roll, “FC & Co.”
Much like York Corporation, FC & Co. in Annenburg was a major player in its city. The multi-billionaire Johnson family backed FC & Co., and its current CEO, Ben Young Johnson, was a year younger than Zachary.
FC & Co. had subsidiaries in Wiltspoon but posed no business threat to York Corporation. This lack of rivalry allowed the two giants to coexist peacefully. “I don’t know the name, but I can assure you it’s an impressive corporation. Do you really think your boss can manage his senior executives if he’s young? Can he lead the company decisively as the CEO?”
As Zachary nodded, she continued, “So, he must be old. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have the experience or authority to manage his senior executives effectively.”
Zachary was left speechless.
While Serenity had a point, Zachary didn’t consider himself old. He would certainly accept that a thirty-year-old might be viewed as old if that were the case.
“Ms. Stone and I connected well. She was courageous in pursuing true love. After all, Mr. York is single. I fully support her in her endeavors.”
Ms. Stone is on a quest for true love, unless Mr. York unexpectedly marries or starts dating someone. She has stated that she will give up if he is already taken, as she values her pride and will not become the other woman.
“I believe Ms. Stone embodies all the right values. She won’t interfere in someone else’s marriage or relationship in her pursuit of true love,” someone remarked.
Upon hearing this, Zachary’s dark eyes brightened. He considered revealing to Elisa that he was married but decided to keep his wife’s identity a secret. Though Elisa might not have malicious intentions, Zachary was unsure how she would react if she learned that his wife was Serenity. As long as they hadn’t signed the divorce papers, Serenity remained his wife, and her safety was his top priority.
“Did Ms. Stone actually say that?” he asked.
“Yes, she did,” came the reply.
“My boss is tired of Ms. Stone’s advances. I could pass along her statement to him; he might rush into marriage just to get rid of her,” Zachary suggested.
Serenity chuckled. “Zachary, knowing your boss, do you think he’s that kind of person? He doesn’t even have a girlfriend. Who would he marry? Sure, he could announce that he’s looking to settle down, and many women would likely be eager to marry him. But would he really be happy marrying someone he has no feelings for?”
Zachary silently thought to himself, ‘I married a woman who doesn’t have feelings for me.’
