Josh would be the first to quit and steer clear if Zachary were interested in men. Was there an issue with his masculinity? Zachary had not yet fallen head over heels for Serenity. However, he intended to show her his affection once he decided to pursue her and consummate their marriage!
It took some time before Zachary rose and made a sudden exit to his room, slamming the door behind him. The loud bang mirrored his foul mood.
Serenity waited until the sound of the door closing faded before getting up. She picked up the paper, crumpled it into a ball, and tossed it into the trash while mumbling to herself, “I’m glad I thought this through. Otherwise, I would have lost to him.”
Today’s lesson was to refrain from making a bet without having complete information about the opponent; otherwise, things could blow up in her face.
As for her proposal of a wager and her sudden change of heart, Serenity felt no concern. It was perfectly normal to back out of a deal when no contract had been signed.
Humming a tune, Serenity turned off the living room lights and returned to her cozy haven. She sprawled on her bed to play on her phone before washing up and turning in for the night.
The following morning, Serenity approached her window and pulled back the heavy curtains. When she opened the window, a chill swept into her room. Shivering from the cold, she quickly closed it again.
Looking at the gray sky, it was clear that rain was on the way.
The earlier chill was a sign of the dropping temperature.
Since Wiltspoon and Annenburg were in the same region, their weather conditions were roughly identical. It was chilly in the mornings and evenings during late fall and early winter. However, once the sun rose, the temperature would rise as well, bringing warmth.
The drop in temperature, coupled with the impending rain, served as a reminder to everyone that it
decided it was time to put on a light jacket.
Serenity stretched before heading to brush her teeth. After changing out of her pajamas, she walked from her bedroom to the kitchen to prepare a pasta dish for Zachary, as he had requested the night before. Upon opening the fridge, she realized they were out of fresh produce. The milk barely sufficed, and she had also run out of cheese, which was essential for any pasta dish.
Determined, Serenity decided to make a quick trip to the market.
As she left the kitchen, Zachary emerged from his room. Dressed in a blue tracksuit and sneakers, he looked ready for a run.
“It’s a bit chilly today and it might rain. Are you going out for a run? Don’t forget to take an umbrella so you don’t get soaked,” she advised.
Noticing that Serenity was carrying her purse, which contained her phone and keys, he asked, “Are you headed to the market?”
“Our fridge is running low. I’m going to pick up some groceries. Would you like to join me? You could jog to the market and back.”
Zachary shook his head, considering the distance between Brynfield and the market. “I’ll just jog around the neighborhood. You can grab groceries from the nearby supermarket. There’s no need to go all the way to the market.”
Serenity replied as she made her way out, “The supermarket prices are higher than at the market. We can’t afford to be extravagant; we need to stay within our budget.”
Zachary had no response as he watched her leave.
“The allowance I give you should be enough for us to live comfortably. Don’t be so frugal. You should treat yourself sometimes. What’s the point of earning money if we can’t enjoy better food, nicer clothes, and a life without reservations?”
Serenity paused outside the door, waiting for Zachary to join her before she closed and locked the front door.
She replied, “Be grateful you married a wife who is budget-conscious and careful not to splurge. Do you really think you could afford me if I wasted a few hundred thousand dollars on a bag?” She then patted Zachary on the chest and continued, “Consider yourself lucky, my friend. You’ve got a good thing going.” Zachary was left speechless.
