chapter 176
Serenity solemnly consumed her meal with a straight face, aware that dining with him could ruin her appetite. Pulling out her phone, she scrolled through the news while enjoying her breakfast. Serenity quickly finished her meal, licking her plate clean. After putting her phone away, she stood up to take her dirty dish to the kitchen. As she rose, she noticed that the spaghetti and sauce on Zachary’s plate had been completely eaten, but the pork belly pieces and basil remained untouched in one corner.
Knowing that Zachary worked long hours, Serenity had added extra pork to his plate, fearing he might be starving. To her surprise, he hadn’t touched it at all, nor had he eaten the basil.
“Zachary,” she said, slamming the table to get his attention. When he looked at her, she pointed to his plate and asked, “Why didn’t you eat the pork?”
Zachary remained silent. As the heir of the York family, he had never consumed more than a handful of pork belly in his life; the saturated fats and grease were simply too much for him.
“I can understand skipping the basil since not everyone enjoys its taste, but don’t waste the meat. The price of pork has increased,” she admonished. Still silent, Zachary got up and walked away with his plate.
As he distanced himself from the conversation, Serenity complained, “I would have eaten the meat myself had I known. He has no appreciation for what I do for him.”
Zachary discarded his leftovers in the bin and washed his dish before exiting the kitchen. Noticing that his wife was still at the dinner table, he pulled out his wallet and took out a hundred-dollar bill. He approached Serenity and handed her the money.
“What’s this for?” she asked.
“I wasted the food you bought, so I’m paying you back for it. Stop grumbling like an old woman. I can’t handle high fat content, so you…”
Next time, don’t put it on my plate. It was true that he lacked the stomach for what she did for him.
