Chapter 181
With Shawn gone, Jasmine voiced her concerns. “Seren, did your sister have another argument with your brother-in-law?”
While gently stroking her nephew’s head, Serenity replied, “Hank is still at his parents’ home. He asked my sister to return his share of the living expenses since he hasn’t been eating at home. He wants his cut back.”
After a brief pause, Jasmine responded, “He really isn’t much of a keeper, is he?”
Serenity was silent for a moment before she said, “My sister needs to find stability before she can think about the future.”
Jasmine had no response to that.
“How was Mrs. Dawson’s party? Did you hit it off with her son?”
“My head is still pounding.”
Serenity blinked and burst out laughing. “Please tell me you didn’t fake being drunk at the party?”
In high society, it was all about poise and grace.
Jasmine could forget about marrying.
“Well, I didn’t get drunk or do anything wild, but I pretended to be tipsy after drinking a lot of wine. I lay on the floor and acted like I was sleeping. My aunt was in a panic trying to drag me out of there. I doubt she’ll ever take me to another event now!”
Jasmine went to great lengths to appease her elders about marrying a wealthy and powerful man.
Although the wives of Wiltspoon’s elite did not attend Mrs. Dawson’s birthday party, many from the affluent social class were present. Jasmine’s act of fake drunkenness and lying on the floor was a major faux pas.
She caused a scene at Mrs. Dawson’s birthday celebration.
In a community where gossip spread rapidly, it didn’t take long for everyone to find out.
These socially conscious wives looked down on Jasmine, ruining the plans of Mrs. Lowe and Mrs. Sox to marry her off.
The Soxes were long-time residents of Wiltspoon.
They made their fortune during the property boom. Since Jasmine’s parents took over the family business, their assets have doubled, if not tripled.
However, in the eyes of the wealthy and powerful, the Soxes were considered nouveau riche, having struck gold purely by luck during the property boom.
Mrs. Lowe was able to marry into the Lowes due to her skill and determination. She also gave birth to a son, which solidified her position as the woman of the house. Nevertheless, not every woman in the Sox family shared Mrs. Lowe’s good fortune.
Judging by Mr. Lowe’s treatment of her, it was clear that Mrs. Lowe wore the pants in the marriage.
Serenity remarked in disbelief, “You really risked it all.”
“Desperate times call for desperate measures,” came the reply.
Jasmine never intended to marry someone wealthy or powerful. Instead of seeking love, she preferred to wait for it to find her. Her family did not pressure her into marriage; she would marry when the right person came along.
She could go on countless dates, but without the right timing, she would not find chemistry with anyone.
“I think my mom and aunt will leave me alone for a while,” she said.
“Your aunt probably wants to distance herself from you and pretend she doesn’t know you,” Serenity joked, grinning.
Jasmine recalled the moment when silence fell upon the room, all eyes on her as she pretended to be drunk and lay on the ground. Her aunt had frantically picked her up and dragged her out of the situation.
Stealing a glance at her aunt’s face, Jasmine saw a mix of emotions.
She burst into laughter.
“Hahaha!”
Both she and her aunt giggled, and Sonny joined in, making the girls laugh even harder.
Guffaws filled the air.
