Chapter 188 While waiting for Zachary at the dessert shop, Serenity didn’t want to sit there without ordering anything, so she decided to get two milkshakes to go. Sitting near the entrance allowed her to spot Zachary as he drove out of the office building.
With her milkshakes in hand, she walked out of the shop.
With a smile on her lovely face, Serenity waved at Zachary.
Zachary drove up and parked in front of her.
She took a few steps forward and opened the passenger seat door.
Once inside the car, she fastened her seatbelt just as Zachary restarted the engine.
“Why are you wearing a black mask?” Serenity asked casually.
Without replying, Zachary removed the mask, wanting to avoid being recognized as he left his office.
Though few had seen him in person, Zachary preferred to err on the side of caution.
Instead of lingering on Zachary’s silence, Serenity continued, “Do you want a milkshake? I bought one for you.”
“I’ll drink mine now, and I can drive after I finish it. Then you can have yours.”
“No, thank you,” Zachary replied, mentioning that he had never tried milkshakes before.
“Then I’ll give it to Jasmine. She likes milkshakes.”
“She enjoys pairing them with sweet treats for tea,” Serenity added.
“I suppose girls tend to prefer milkshakes,” Zachary said. “I rarely have them myself.”
“I don’t like them that much either.” Serenity took a sip and continued, “I seldom drink milkshakes too. They’re not exactly healthy.”
She usually ordered juice whenever Jasmine ordered milkshakes.
“What brought you all the way here to pick me up today?” Zachary asked quietly. “You could have just called.”
What if I hadn’t been in the office? You would have come all this way for nothing.” He just happened to be in the office today. Usually, Zachary wasn’t around at this hour. “Do you always discuss business during meals?” “Yes,” Zachary replied. “Many deals are finalized over lunch and dinner appointments.” Serenity said, “Oh, I’ll call you in advance next time. I just wanted to surprise you.” She added, “I guess I ended up scaring you more than surprising you.”
“My sister is currently looking for a job and will join us for lunch at the shop, so I made extra.” She continued, “You’ve been very generous and caring toward me, and I felt I should repay you by picking you up for lunch together.” After a brief silence, Zachary said, “Serenity, we signed an agreement, but you don’t have to dwell on the divorce once the time is up. We can get along like any other ordinary couple. There’s no need to feel like you owe me for everything.” Serenity responded matter-of-factly, “It’s all about the give-and-take between a husband and wife.” Zachary was taken aback, at a loss for words because she had a valid point.
“If you don’t want me to pick you up and share meals together, I won’t come again.” Serenity worried that he disapproved of her visiting his workplace. She recalled what he had told her when they first obtained their marriage license: they were to keep their marriage a secret, and she must not disclose their status to anyone without his consent. Zachary fell silent again, unsure of what to say. Serenity picking him up at work indicated that she was beginning to show him care and attention. However, they were supposed to keep their marriage under wraps.
wraps.
He was reluctant to weave a web of lies to protect himself each time she arrived.
Serenity interpreted Zachary’s silence as an acknowledgment of her question.
After finishing the last of her milkshake, she vowed never to pick him up from work at York Corporation again.
