Chapter 195
Chapter 195
Zachary returned to his table with a composed expression. Once the dishes were served, he ate quietly, not participating in the conversation with his friends. His mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Serenity smiling and serving food to Shawn.
“Zachary, you’re acting a bit strange today,” Duncan remarked, spearing a vegetable with his fork and taking a bite. He glanced at Zachary, who sat across from him, and continued, “Why are you so quiet? You’ve just been shoveling food into your mouth.” Josh nodded in agreement.
Zachary replied blankly, “I’m hungry.” He had only eaten a breakfast burrito that he didn’t like that morning. It hadn’t satisfied him, and he was starving.
Of course, Zachary was also in a bad mood. When he felt this way, he tended to eat continuously. He thought to himself, ‘So what if she serves Shawn food? I don’t care. Does she think I’ll get jealous? As I’ve said before, I don’t know what jealousy is and will never experience it!’
They were merely husband and wife in name, having signed an agreement to avoid interfering in each other’s lives. Serenity needed to find her next husband before their divorce. As long as she and Shawn didn’t move in together while she was still married to Zachary and didn’t cheat on him, he would ignore it.
Zachary tried to convince himself of this, but images of Serenity and Shawn chatting and laughing kept replaying in his mind.
Duncan and Josh knew that Zachary couldn’t tolerate nagging from his grandmother, which was why he had finally married the woman who had helped her. When Zachary mentioned that he was hungry, Josh playfully teased, “Aren’t you a married man? How can you be hungry? Didn’t your wife make a good breakfast for you?” When Josh encountered Zachary in the office…
Zachary was always eager to showcase his marital status to Josh, boasting, “I’m a married man.” In response, Josh playfully tugged at Zachary’s sleeve and remarked, “As a married man, you should wear the clothes your wife bought for you.” Zachary, however, remained indifferent. He brushed Josh’s hand away and replied coldly, “We’re just husband and wife in name. We only put on a show for Nana.” Meanwhile, Serenity was busy chatting and laughing with Shawn, serving him food, and didn’t have time to prepare breakfast for Zachary. Instead, she bought him a cheap breakfast burrito, which he disliked. Despite his distaste, he felt obligated to eat it, knowing that if he discarded it, she would feel her money was wasted. Additionally, Serenity had only gifted him a suit jacket and a few ties previously, neglecting to buy him any casual wear. He couldn’t very well wear a suit at home on weekends, could he? Remembering, he realized that the suit jacket was merely a token of appreciation for his help with a trending story on Twitter. It was her way of saying thank you, not a thoughtful gift.
“Tsk! Your act was so convincing that I almost believed you two were a model couple,” Josh laughed, adding, “I was even considering getting married at first sight!” He continued, “Duncan, you have no idea how often Zack brags about his marriage at the office. I thought being single was great, but seeing him flaunt his happy married life made me think about tying the knot myself!” Duncan smiled and replied, “Then you better hurry up. With your qualities, many women would be eager to pursue you as soon as you signal that you’re available.”
“Duncan was on the lookout for a wife.” He was unique in many ways. Coming from the respectable Lewis family as their fourth son, he had a solid family background. However, he bore a daunting scar on his face, which made it difficult for him to find a girlfriend, as women often found his appearance off-putting. Duncan was a tall and robust man, but the scar gave him a fierce look that many found intimidating. Despite this, he remained unconcerned about others’ opinions. When it came to love and marriage, he chose to take things as they came. Unlike his close friend, he was determined not to let his grandmother pressure him into marrying someone he had no genuine feelings for.
