Chapter 229
Old Mrs. York was furious with her grandson’s behavior, so much so that she refused to walk any further and sat down on a stone bench by the roadside. She had put considerable effort into persuading him to marry, but…
Zachary paused for a moment before sitting beside her. He said calmly, “Nana, you know love cannot be forced. I was raised by you, and since you asked me to marry her to repay your kindness, I listened to you.
“You promised me that you wouldn’t interfere with our married life. The day I obtained my marriage license with Serenity, I told you I needed to evaluate her character to see if she’s worthy of spending my life with. If not, we’ll end things in six months.”
Old Mrs. York grumbled, “With your stubborn nature, you wouldn’t admit it even if you fell in love with Serenity.”
Zachary was left speechless.
“Forget it; I’m not angry. I was wrong to pressure you into marrying Serenity. You’re right—love cannot be forced. You can do as you please. As you mentioned, you two married in secret, so not many people know you are husband and wife. Even if you divorce, it will minimize any impact on Serenity.”
She sighed. “I just hope you won’t regret this decision. Don’t come to me in the future asking for help.”
Zachary pursed his lips tightly, remaining silent. “Please call the driver for me. I’m leaving now. When I see you, it’s like seeing your grandfather. Before he passed, he was worried about your marriage and feared you would be a bachelor for life.”
Zachary thought, ‘I was still very young when Grandpa passed. There was no need for concern about marriage at that age.’
Of course, he wasn’t old now either; he was only thirty.
“Have breakfast before you go, Nana.”
Regardless, Zachary remained respectful towards his nana. He was
raised by his grandparents. After his grandfather’s passing, his nana quickly became lonely. He dedicated a significant amount of time to support her until she began to heal from the loss of her beloved partner. Once she returned to her old yet youthful self, he felt a sense of relief and took over managing the family business.
“I lost my appetite just by looking at your face. I’ll eat at Serenity’s shop. I’ll only regain my appetite when I see my granddaughter-in-law’s face.”
Zachary wasn’t upset by his nana’s dismissal. He understood her fondness for Serenity, which extended beyond the fact that Serenity had saved her life. Nana appreciated Serenity’s character immensely. “I’ll ask Sam to pack breakfast for you to bring over and enjoy with Serenity.”
Old Mrs. York considered this and agreed. She told her grandson, “Tell Sam to pack extra. Serenity has a hearty appetite. That Jasmine girl is there too. With the two of them around, I believe I could clear an entire buffet.” Zachary couldn’t help but smile at the thought of Serenity’s potential as a glutton. He had to admit that he enjoyed dining with her as well; every time he saw her eating with enthusiasm, his own appetite would increase, prompting him to take an extra serving. “Sure.” Zachary pulled out his phone and called Sam, instructing him to prepare three servings of breakfast and have Old Mrs. York’s driver deliver them, as Nana would be heading to Wiltspoon School.
Sam understood.
“Nana, are you really not coming back with me for breakfast?” Zachary double-checked with his grandmother after instructing Sam.
“No. If I go with you, Serenity will have finished eating by the time I arrive at her shop.”
She then quickly took out her phone and added, “I’ll let her know so she doesn’t buy breakfast herself.”
Zachary observed in silence as his grandmother called Serenity. He was also curious about what time she would return home after giving her statement at the police station.
the police station.
Serenity was roused by the phone call, and her voice sounded a bit groggy as she greeted her grandmother. The old woman immediately recognized that Serenity was still asleep and chuckled. “You’re not up yet? I thought you would have been awake by now.”
In the past, Serenity would have already gone to the market to buy food and returned by this time. “I went to bed late last night, so I slept in today. Where are you now, Nana?” Serenity asked, assuming the old lady was on her way over.
