chapter 230
“Sure! Just wait for me at the store; I’ll be there shortly. But Nana, you don’t have to wake up so early in the future. You can sleep in; I won’t be hungry.”
“I’m older now and a light sleeper. I wake up as soon as the sun rises, so I’m used to it. I’m not concerned about you going hungry; I just enjoy sharing meals with you. Food tastes so much better when I’m with you.”
Serenity laughed, recalling how often she had shared meals with the old lady over the past few months.
Old Mrs. York was well aware of the many old shops in Wiltspoon that serve delicious snacks. She frequently took Serenity and Jasmine to enjoy all the famous and authentic treats the town has to offer.
Now that she was older, her appetite had decreased, and with her improved living conditions, she had become more selective about food. They chatted for a while before Old Mrs. York ended the call.
“I wasn’t clumsy in speech. How did you grow up to be like this? You have a perfectly functional mouth, yet you don’t know how to speak.”
Zachary’s handsome face flushed a soft red. His grandmother, Nana, reprimanded him. “Tell me, what did you want to ask Serenity? I’ll help you ask her when I see her later.”
Old Mrs. York had decided to assist her grandson because she was eager for the young couple to get along. Zachary tensed his face again and stayed silent. Nana was furious and felt like smacking him again. She rubbed her hands together and muttered, “Is he really my grandson?”
“I just want to know what time she came back last night. She had an accident yesterday.”
“What accident?”
“A group of punks stopped her car in the middle of the road. They wanted to attack her, but she fought back. Eventually, the police took both the punks and her back to the station.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Old Mrs. York glared at him. The next moment, she smacked him even harder. Zachary wore a running tank top, leaving his arms bare. A red mark appeared on his arm from Nana’s slap, clearly showing her anger.
“You saw that happen? Yet you did nothing? Zachary, even if you don’t love Serenity, you can’t just stand by when she’s in danger. You should stand up for what’s right, even if it’s for a stranger—let alone your wife.”
Zachary waited until his grandmother finished scolding him and replied sullenly, “She’s very skilled. I didn’t even get the chance to save the damsel in distress.” Old Mrs. York’s reprimand came to an abrupt end.
