Chapter 254
“Serenity, what’s all this?”
Callum had noticed the distinct aroma of seafood.
“It’s seafood. A friend of mine brought it back from her beach vacation. She gave me quite a bit. It’s all fresh, and since your brother and I can’t eat that much, I thought I’d share some with you to take home,” Serenity explained.
Callum glanced at his nana. Seeing that she was accepting it, he remarked, “This is a lot.”
Seafood was not something their family typically lacked.
However, since it was a gift from his sister-in-law, he felt obliged to help bring it home.
“Nana, don’t forget to give everyone a portion to try.”
Serenity had carefully prepared individual portions for each family unit, packaged in separate bags. Once they got home, Grandma May would only need to distribute them accordingly. They were evenly divided.
“Alright, I will.”
Grandma May waited for Callum to place the seafood in the trunk before getting into the car. She then told Serenity, “I texted Zack earlier, asking him to come over and eat with you before heading back to work at the company.”
“He should be on his way now. Callum works at the same company and he’s already here. You should get dinner started. No need to see us off,” she added.
Serenity was momentarily speechless. “Nana, you should have mentioned that sooner. I was planning to heat up the leftover lunch, and there’s only enough for me.”
“If you start preparing dinner now, you’ll have enough time. Go ahead! Zack often works late, so cook a few extra dishes for him to ensure he has a full meal,” Grandma May encouraged.
Serenity couldn’t refuse Grandma May’s request.
After sending her off, Serenity found herself alone in the bookstore.
She quickly grabbed her phone to text Zachary and inform him.
moment, contemplating her request. Finally, he replied, “Sure, I can help with that.”
Serenity smiled, appreciating his willingness. “Great! I won’t be long.” She stepped back into her shop to grab her wallet before heading out.
As she walked to the restaurant, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. Unblocking Zachary felt like a weight lifted off her shoulders. The connection they shared had always been there, even if it had been briefly interrupted.
When she returned with the food, she found Zachary rearranging some books that had been out of place. “You actually did some tidying up,” she remarked, surprised.
Zachary shrugged, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Just trying to help.”
They settled in to eat, and as they shared the meal, the atmosphere shifted. It felt more relaxed, more familiar. Serenity glanced at Zachary, noticing how easy it was to slip back into their rhythm.
“So, how’s work been?” she asked, trying to keep the conversation light.
“Busy as usual,” he replied, “but I can’t complain.”
They continued to talk, laughter filling the small shop, as if no time had passed since their last conversation. For Serenity, it was a welcome change, and she couldn’t help but hope that this was the start of something new between them.
He gloomily agreed, “Okay.” To reconcile with his wife, the great Zachary York had to eat leftovers.
