Serenity got into her car and drove off quickly.
Zachary watched her leave before entering the bookshop. He glanced at the materials she hadn’t put away yet but couldn’t make sense of them, so he turned and headed to the kitchen.
He washed the wok, added a little water, and placed the leftovers from lunch into it before turning on the gas to heat everything up.
Out of boredom, he opened the fridge and noticed it was packed with seafood.
All of it had been given by Elisa Stone.
Elisa was quite generous to Serenity, even bringing back an entire car full of seafood for her.
Thinking about how Serenity had taught Elisa how to pursue him made him realize that this was why Elisa had provided so much seafood… especially since he had already eaten quite a bit for lunch.
“Serenity? Serenity!”
Shawn Lowe’s voice called out from outside.
Zachary quickly turned down the heat to its lowest setting and hurried into the bathroom, shutting the door behind him.
The reason was simple: Shawn had met him before. If Shawn saw him, his true identity would be revealed to Serenity.
Zachary did not want Shawn to disclose his real identity.
Shawn entered the bookshop and called for Serenity a few more times when he noticed no one was around.
In the bathroom, Zachary pinched his nose and shouted, “Who’s there? Serenity isn’t here right now. Is something wrong?”
Hearing a stranger’s voice and noticing the national MPV parked in front of the shop, Shawn guessed it was Serenity’s husband.
He paused for a moment before replying, “Are you Serenity’s husband? Where did she go? It’s not a big deal; I can just call her.”
“She’s probably driving right now. You can tell me what you need to say to her, and I’ll…”
“Please pass on the message when she returns,” Zachary said from the bathroom.
How could Shawn tell Zachary the truth?
He had come to persuade Serenity to accompany him to a business reception at Wiltspoon Hotel that evening. Although Lowe Enterprise had its standing in Wiltspoon’s business community, Shawn, as a successor, was still learning the ropes. He was just a small fry. His father had arranged for him to attend that night’s reception to broaden his industry connections and meet influential figures.
Once he took over Lowe Enterprise, even if the management changed drastically, he would still have the opportunity to select from the elites at this reception and cultivate his own confidants.
“It’s nothing much, brother-in-law,” Shawn said, moving further inside. “Where are you, brother-in-law?”
He noticed that the kitchen was empty.
Zachary felt a surge of frustration. ‘Brother-in-law? Who, exactly, is he calling that? You refer to me as brother-in-law, yet you’re trying to steal my wife!’
Zachary viewed Shawn as a romantic rival, and he had every right to. Shawn was clearly waiting for him and Serenity to divorce.
Did Shawn really believe he had a chance? If Serenity were to have feelings for Shawn, she would have expressed them long ago. She had made it clear that she only saw him as a little brother!
“I’m in the bathroom. You can wait outside for a bit; I’ll be done shortly.”
“I—I have something urgent to take care of, so I won’t stay. I’ll take my leave first, brother-in-law.”
Shawn felt a twinge of guilt. Despite Serenity’s rushed marriage, he couldn’t ask her to accompany him to a business reception right in front of her husband.
“Alright, I won’t see you off then.”
Zachary would never request that Shawn stay.
Shawn hesitated for a moment before turning to walk outside.
