Chapter 35
As Zachary and Serenity, a legally married couple, navigated their relationship, they found themselves unencumbered by societal expectations regarding physical affection.
Zachary took it upon himself to carry little Sonny upstairs. Despite not having an extensive vocabulary, Sonny quickly picked up a new word. The other children, including Rowan, tended to shy away from Zachary, which made Rowan particularly eager for Serenity to become his mentor.
Interestingly, Sonny had no fear of Zachary. Nestled comfortably in Zachary’s embrace, Sonny affectionately referred to him as “Uncle.” The newlyweds welcomed the York family into their home and introduced them to one another.
Understanding the challenges the sisters faced after losing their parents at a young age, the Yorks held Liberty in high regard. They admired how she had managed her life and education with the help of her parents’ insurance.
Although Liberty had become a homemaker and was somewhat disconnected from the outside world, she had been well-acquainted with the professional realm prior to her marriage. She could easily see that the Yorks were a cultured and tightly-knit family, a contrast to many rural families.
Grandma May had mentioned that the Yorks hailed from the countryside, yet her children and grandchildren had succeeded in establishing themselves in the city. Although they had relocated to urban life, Grandma May still made frequent visits back to their hometown.
The Yorks owned an estate on the city’s outskirts, complete with farmland, lending credibility to Grandma May’s tales of rural living. One could only wonder if Grandma May had a secret stash of money trees instead of mere crops.
With her sister’s family visiting, Serenity decided it was a good time to begin preparing lunch. To her surprise, Zachary came into the kitchen to lend a hand.
“I can manage just fine, Mr. York. Why don’t you spend some time with our guests?” she suggested.
Zachary softly replied, “My family feels right at home. They’ll be just fine without me.”
“You could chat with my brother-in-law,” Serenity encouraged.
At that moment, a chill ran through the air.
In Zachary’s perspective, the situation unfolded quicker than anyone could comprehend. Yet, he kept his distance and replied, “I have nothing in common to discuss with Hank.”
Hank, on the other hand, was perceived as a nuisance, always trying to flatter Zachary. Despite his annoying demeanor, Hank held a position as a manager at a well-respected company, suggesting he might possess more substance than just empty words.
