Chapter 4071
Mrs. Du continued, “I understand that your relationship with Spencer has always been like that of siblings, but relationships can evolve. Who’s to say it couldn’t develop into something deeper? Abby, while you haven’t committed to Evan yet, keep your options open. Explore another path for yourself.”
“Additionally, making Evan jealous might be beneficial. He was already envious the other day when he overheard our conversation. Let him see that you have other choices and that you could marry well without him. Spencer’s family adores you, and our families have always been close. You’ve known Spencer since childhood—if that’s not the foundation for a strong relationship, I don’t know what is.”
Abby sighed, her voice tinged with frustration. “Mom, if I get too close to Brother Spencer, it won’t just create problems with Evan—it’ll upset Victoria too. Spencer and Victoria clearly have feelings for each other. I don’t know what’s stopping them, but they’ve never crossed that line to make it official. Can’t the elders in both families see that?”
Though Abby didn’t have romantic feelings for Spencer, their families seemed intent on pairing them up.
Mrs. Du dismissed Abby’s worries. “It’s merely a misunderstanding. Both of you are single right now—neither of you is in a serious relationship. What’s wrong with giving it a chance? There’s nothing immoral about it. Who knows? Spending more time together might encourage Spencer and Victoria to finally confront their feelings.”
“And as for Evan, seeing you with Spencer will motivate him. It’ll make him realize how much he wants you.”
It was evident that Mrs. Du genuinely hoped Abby would end up with Spencer. Spencer intended to remain in Huyoniville for the long term.
Evan would eventually return to Wiltspoon. The two cities were quite distant, and the thought of Abby moving away unsettled Mrs. Du. If Abby married Evan, she would be relocating far from home. The York family was open to welcoming a daughter-in-law, but for Mrs. Du, the prospect of losing her daughter again—especially after recently having her back—was hard to bear.
“Abby,” Mrs. Du suggested thoughtfully, “why not ask Evan if he’d consider being a live-in son-in-law?”
Abby couldn’t help but chuckle, lowering her voice to a playful whisper. “Mom, we’re not even dating yet, and you’re already discussing this? Besides, I have brothers—my parents don’t need a live-in son-in-law.”
“And let’s be honest, Mom. Evan is the fourth young master of the York family. He’s capable, smart, and resourceful. If he became a live-in son-in-law, wouldn’t that put a lot of pressure on my brothers?”
Her brothers had always been cautious around Evan, worried that he might gradually use his influence as a son-in-law to take control of the Du Group. Abby’s sister, Adalee, had also made it clear that she wouldn’t hold onto her position forever. Once Adalee married, she planned to resign as president of the Du Group to work for her husband’s company instead. Her objective was to strengthen the business ties between her husband’s family and their mother’s, but she wouldn’t cling to the reins of the family business.
Adalee was determined to prevent anyone outside the family from taking over or dismantling the Du family’s legacy. If her brothers were unable to lead, she would focus on preparing the next generation—their nephews and nieces—to carry the family forward.
The circumstances of the Du family were quite different from those of the Ormond family. In the Ormond family, the eldest daughter was the head of the household because…
The sons were still too young. In the Du family, however, the male relatives were older than Adalee. Unfortunately, they lacked both the skills and interest necessary to manage the family business, which left the responsibility resting on Adalee’s shoulders. While she excelled in her role, Adalee had made the personal decision to step back once she married. Recently, she had been encouraging her eldest brother to become more involved in the company. She wanted him to understand the intricacies of the business so that he could take over when she stepped down.
