Tania chuckled and remarked to Rosella, “You’re laughing so loudly on the phone—poor Evan must feel terrible. He’s probably quite uncomfortable right now, especially since you’re his mom. At least wait until the call is over before you start laughing.”
Madisyn added, “Exactly. You could have saved your laughter for us. Instead, you laughed right in his ear. He’s already in pain, both physically and emotionally, and no one is there to properly comfort him.”
Rosella shrugged, unfazed. “Abby’s there to take care of him, isn’t she? She’ll provide some comfort. But it’s late now—hasn’t Abby gone back to rest? Evan hasn’t even managed to win her over yet. How could she possibly stay overnight at the hospital just for him?”
The elderly lady, listening with a knowing smile, gently reminded them, “You all realize it’s late, don’t you? Why aren’t you heading to bed? It’s almost midnight. Thankfully, the guest rooms are spacious enough for the four of us—mother-in-law and daughters-in-law—to chat and laugh without disturbing anyone. However, remember we’re guests here, and we shouldn’t inconvenience the Johnson family.”
The three sisters-in-law glanced at the clock, realizing how late it had become.
Tania, the eldest sister-in-law, stood up and took charge. “Alright, Mom, let’s call it a night. We’ll get some rest now and go for a walk tomorrow.”
While the scenery at FC Manor was beautiful, it was not much different from what they were accustomed to at Wildridge Manor. After decades of living there, they had grown somewhat indifferent to its charm. A change of pace sounded more appealing than admiring the same views.
Besides, they were a bit tired of doting on little Avah all day.
“Let’s plan to explore the area tomorrow,”
Tania continued, “Even though we’ve visited Annenburg a few times, there are always new things to discover.” The elderly lady nodded, her smile softening. “That sounds lovely. Some of our old friends have mentioned wanting to join us for the walk as well.” She paused thoughtfully before adding, “Perhaps we can bring Avah along with her siblings. That little girl becomes more adorable every day—she’s like a living doll from a New Year’s painting. If I had a great-granddaughter like her, I’d probably wake up smiling in my dreams.”
The wistful tone of the old lady York did not go unnoticed. The three sisters-in-law exchanged silent glances, aware of how much their mother-in-law longed for a granddaughter. However, her disappointment was not their fault. They had all tried, after all. Tania, Madisyn, and Rosella had each hoped for a daughter at some point. Yet, no matter how many times they attempted, the outcome was always the same: boys.
Rosella had once contemplated having a fourth child, but the old lady York had intervened. She was concerned about Rosella’s health and didn’t want her to risk another pregnancy at her age. More than that, she feared that the fourth child would also be a boy. Madisyn’s experience had provided enough evidence; she had tried for a daughter four times only to end up with four sons—whom the family affectionately called “the four great kings.”
Tania, on the other hand, had given up after her second child, Tatum, and didn’t even consider trying for a third. The memory of the ninth child’s birth remained vivid in their minds. When the nurse emerged from the delivery room holding the newborn, everyone had gathered around her, anticipation filling the air. The old lady had hesitantly asked the nurse about the baby’s gender, her voice trembling with hope. The nurse smiled.
Warmly, they congratulated the family, announcing that it was a boy. Both mother and child were healthy. Upon hearing it was another son, the mother burst into tears right there. The elderly Mrs. York felt the urge to cry as well. That moment marked the end of her dream for a granddaughter. By the time the ninth boy was born, it was evident that the family’s legacy would remain a “temple of monks.” Accepting this reality was not easy, but there was little they could do. After Madisyn’s four sons, Rosella had completely given up hope for a daughter. It had turned into a family joke to refer to their lineage as a “temple of monks.” However, the truth was that their repeated attempts to have a daughter had only resulted in an expanding family tree filled with boys, generation after generation.
