As long as he’s by her side, your chances are minimal.” Kathryn herself lacked true power; her strength stemmed from Pedro. Pedro was exceptional—capable, resourceful, and enveloped in mystery. No one could accurately assess his influence or connections, not even the head of the Farrell family, who relied on Pedro for significant tasks.

Orders were given without questioning how they were executed; results were all that mattered. Holden continued, “Even if you can’t eliminate Pedro, you must find a way to drive him away from Kathryn. Without Pedro, Kathryn is just a coward, easily manageable. Whatever you do, ensure that nothing leads back to you. Kathryn has strong connections in Wiltspoon.” He sighed deeply, his voice heavy with regret. “Looking back, everything that has happened to our family began when Kathryn returned. If we had known, we would never have allowed Shiloh and Kathryn to be swapped. We should have either made the best of a bad situation or eliminated Kathryn before the truth emerged. Had we done that, Shiloh would have inherited everything.”

His tone turned darker. “If it weren’t for Kathryn, your mother might not have been defeated so swiftly—or at all. She wouldn’t have had to die. Kathryn betrayed your mother, even after your mother treated her well during the six months before everything unraveled.” Holden’s frustration was evident. “I did everything I could to protect Kathryn and elevate her, and this is how she repaid me? She’s heartless, ungrateful, and unfilial. How could I have raised such a daughter?”

Holden’s resentment toward his daughter was unmistakable. What he regretted most was allowing their daughters to switch identities in the first place. Initially, Clarissa had favored Shiloh, but the strict rules of the Farrell family were unavoidable. The head position had to be passed down to a daughter, typically the eldest.
