Pedro had sent her a message indicating that her two adopted brothers and two biological brothers were lying in wait along her route home. As soon as she approached, they intended to ram her car. Ideally, she would die on the spot. If that didn’t happen, they planned to kidnap her and take her to an undeveloped coastal area where Marco awaited. Their strategy was straightforward—kill her, dismember her body, and dispose of the remains in the sea, leaving the big fish to handle the aftermath.

It was cold-blooded. Family meant nothing to them. And as for her so-called brothers and sisters? They could rot in prison. There was no chance they would be released to harm anyone again. Pedro had assured her that once incarcerated, they would be “dealt with” by other inmates. If she wanted them permanently eliminated, that could also be arranged.

Kathryn chose not to respond. She wanted to observe how the night unfolded before making any decisions. If, at the last moment, her brothers hesitated or showed even a hint of mercy, she would reciprocate. Once he completed his mission and returned, she planned to present him with the gifts, which would surely delight him. As Kathryn browsed, she noticed that time seemed to pass more quickly than she expected. When she finally left the jewelry store and checked the clock, it was just after nine. She frowned in disbelief. “How is it only nine o’clock? It felt like I’ve been shopping forever.” The streets were still lively, with many people just beginning their night.

One of her bodyguards chuckled, “Young ladies like you often rush into a store, buy a bunch of items, and leave in a hurry. Then you move on to the next shop and repeat the process—quick decisions, fast purchases, no hesitation or bargaining. That’s why it doesn’t take long.”

Kathryn found herself at a loss for words. She was accustomed to this approach. With her busy schedule, she never lingered when shopping. If she wanted something, she went directly to the store, made her purchase, and left. In. Out. Done.

“How do other people manage to shop all night? I admire their patience,” she remarked. Although she had already bought clothes and jewelry, she was uncertain about what else to acquire. She didn’t really need anything; everything she purchased tonight was merely a way to pass the time.

Eventually, she and her bodyguards stopped at a coffee shop. She ordered a coffee for each of them, plus one for herself. Tonight was going to be long, and she needed to stay alert.

Kathryn lingered at the café until eleven, then finally departed with her bodyguards. A nagging feeling crept in—she sensed that someone was following her.
