Marco seized one of the knives and shot Sage a cold glare. “What’s the matter? Are you backing out? Are you scared?”

Sage stammered, “I… Brother, I’ve never killed anyone before. She’s our sister… I—I just don’t think I can do it.”

Marco let out a sharp, scornful laugh. “You still consider her family? She never thought of us that way. Reflect on everything she has done. Every action she took was like a knife in our backs.” He thrust the knife toward Sage. “Here. Go ahead. You don’t have to kill her immediately—just inflict some pain, take a chunk from her shoulder or arm. Let her suffer first. A quick death would be too merciful. If I had the time, I’d ensure she begged for death before we finished.”

Marco’s eyes blazed with fury. “Sage, think about Mom. Think about Shiloh. Think about Dad. He’s crippled because of her. She knew Mom was coming back but didn’t inform Dad. She was aware the wine was poisoned and stayed silent, allowing the plan to succeed. Because of her, Shiloh and Dad have been destroyed.”

Marco understood all too well why his mother had become distant from his father—why she had been devastated over Shiloh. Everything traced back to that scandal. And Shiloh… If she were still alive…

If Marco were alive, he would have divorced his wife and married Shiloh, giving her the recognition she deserved. They had grown up together, and before discovering they weren’t blood relatives, he had already spoiled her immensely. Even after learning the truth, nothing changed between them. “I know,” Sage admitted, his voice tight. “I followed you and Noel here. I never intended to walk away from this.” If they got caught, he understood he would face the consequences alongside them. But actually raising the knife himself—that was entirely different. Sage wasn’t the mastermind, and that distinction would affect how he was judged.

Marco scoffed. “Useless.” With that, he turned and walked toward Kathryn, gripping the knife tightly. The spring air in Jensburg was still bitterly cold, especially late at night, with the wind from the sea cutting through like ice.

Kathryn, already in pain from her injuries, shivered as the cold seeped into her bones. Yet, she wasn’t afraid. She listened intently to Marco and Sage’s conversation, her mind focused on one thing—stalling. The longer they hesitated, the closer Pedro would be to the police. If they were going to act, they needed to hurry up; she was tired of waiting in the cold. Marco stopped in front of her, the knife catching the faintest glimmer in the moonlight.

In the darkness, Noel shifted uneasily. Watching Marco step forward with the weapon made reality hit harder.

His voice trembled. “Brother… are we really doing this?”

Marco shot him an exasperated look. “What now? Are you backing out too?”
