Kathryn remarked, “By the time they get out, I’ll be long gone. I doubt we’ll ever cross paths again.” Even when she visited her mother’s grave during the Qingming Festival, she would steer clear of them. Furthermore, the family’s gravekeeper may not even allow her brothers to pay their respects, as the Farrells held resentment toward their deceased mother.
Kathryn turned to Liberty, saying, “Don’t worry. I’m not going to die. Honestly, I don’t feel like I’ve lost anything by doing this.”
Liberty scoffed, “Pfft, don’t talk about dying first thing in the morning. We’re all going to live to a hundred.” Kathryn chuckled again. “Alright, alright, we’ll live to a hundred. But don’t look so distressed—it makes me want to cry.”
Liberty’s voice softened. “Don’t cry. It breaks my heart. Why won’t you trust me?”
Kathryn sighed. “It’s not that I don’t trust you, Liberty; it’s my brothers I don’t trust.” Liberty had no response to that.
Pedro returned with a bowl of porridge. “Miss, you must be hungry. You have a cold—eat something light.”
He then addressed Liberty and Duncan, “Miss Hunt, Mr. Lewis, I didn’t bring breakfast for you two. You’ll need to get your own.”
Liberty had to return to work anyway. “Don’t worry about us. Just take care of Kathryn,” she replied.
She stood up to leave. “Kathryn, get some rest. I’ll check on you after work.”
Kathryn waved them off. “Go on. I’m finally getting some proper sleep.”
Since arriving in Jensburg after the New Year, she had gained a solid understanding of the Farrell Group’s dynamics.
With Duncan guiding her, Liberty was able to manage things even in Kathryn’s absence.
After Liberty and Duncan left, Kathryn asked Pedro to escort them out. He walked them to the elevator before returning to her side.
Kathryn attempted to sit up and eat on her own.
“Miss, please don’t move. Let me help you. Your right arm is injured,” Pedro said, noting the IV drip attached to her left hand.
She sighed in frustration. “Can’t I do anything for myself?”
Pedro assisted her in sitting up, then picked up the bowl and began to feed her.
Kathryn was extremely hungry and quickly finished the porridge.
Noticing Pedro’s tense expression, she tried to lift her hand to touch his face, despite her injuries.
The motion tugged at her wound, causing her to hiss in pain and drop her hand immediately.
Pedro frowned. “Miss, what are you trying to do? Please stay still.”
Kathryn looked at him with a small smile. “Pedro, I can tell you’re upset. I just wanted to touch your face to calm you down, but I hurt myself instead.”
Pedro’s expression remained stern, his anger unmistakable. He was furious that she had disregarded his warnings and had gotten hurt.
Even if her injury wasn’t serious, it distressed him to see her in pain.
Even a minor scratch felt like a wound to his own heart.
Yet, here she was, moving around carelessly. Pedro’s anger only intensified.
