Chapter 4248
Chapter 4248
Abby was concerned that Spencer was overreacting.
While she enjoyed talking, laughing, and sharing a meal, she felt uncomfortable with physical contact. This discomfort wasn’t due to Evan; it stemmed from her feelings about Victoria.
To Abby, Spencer was tied to Victoria. She referred to Victoria as “sister,” which made Spencer feel like family—essentially her brother-in-law.
“I’ll wait for you to finish work,” Evan said gently. “Abby, are you done? Are you hungry? Let me treat you to a midnight snack.” He was determined not to allow Spencer to take on that role.
If anyone was going to treat Abby, it would be Evan.
Before Abby could respond, Spencer interjected. “Since Mr. York is offering, let’s give him the chance. We’re all hungry anyway.”
He made it clear that Evan wasn’t just treating Abby; he was including Spencer and his secretary as well. Spencer was intent on being a third wheel.
Evan chuckled. “Alright, midnight snack for everyone.”
Then, turning to Abby, he asked softly, “Are you coming?”
Abby, unimpressed, replied, “Brother Spencer said he was hungry, so let’s go.”
Evan grinned. “Alright, I won’t argue. Abby, follow me.”
He led her into the VIP room, releasing her hand as they approached. Picking up a bouquet from the coffee table, he handed it to her.
Abby glanced at the flowers and then at the gifts stacked on the table. She frowned. “Evan, you don’t need to bring so much every time you visit. I don’t want them. Take them back.”
Evan smiled. “These are just small gifts, things I know you like. They’re my way of showing I care. Please accept them.”
Abby took only the bouquet. “I’ll take the flowers, but nothing else.”
Accepting the bouquet gave Evan a glimmer of hope.
After all, the last time he had eaten an excessive amount of chili peppers just to impress her, he ended up in the hospital. The flowers were a small reward for his suffering.
As
for the luxurious gifts—those she would refuse.
She had no use for them. Her closet was already overflowing with clothes, some of which remained unworn. Her collection of designer bags and skincare products filled an entire room. And jewelry? Her family cherished her, continuously presenting her with pieces far more valuable than anything Evan could provide. The ruby set from her grandmother alone was irreplaceable.
“Abby…”
“If you’re set on giving me more, don’t bother treating me. I’ll have dinner with Brother Spencer instead.” Abby’s tone turned icy.
Evan quickly relented. “Okay, okay, I’ll take them back. But please, let me treat you to dinner. Just give me a chance.”
He still had a long way to go to win her over. But at least she accepted the flowers—that was a start.
Abby turned and exited, bouquet in hand.
Evan swiftly grabbed the gift boxes, eager not to waste a moment. He needed to keep pace with her before Spencer had another opportunity to draw her away.
As they stepped outside, Evan made sure to position himself between Abby and Spencer. Whenever Spencer attempted to get closer, Evan adjusted his position accordingly.
No way was he allowing Spencer to sit next to her.
Abby viewed Spencer as a brother—didn’t he understand that? Yet, he shamelessly hovered around her.
