**Chapter 57**

“Serenity, we had an understanding. We’re set to divorce in six months, so can’t you hold off on seeing someone else until then? I don’t understand why you’re already looking for another guy while we’re still legally married.”

“You’re essentially cheating on me right now. I may not have any feelings for you, nor will I ever, but no man will tolerate being cheated on.” Zachary’s anger was evident; he was furious that Serenity was so quick to jump into another relationship. Shawn, who had a crush on Serenity, was Zachary’s romantic rival. This situation was less about love and more about a man’s pride and dignity. Serenity glanced around, seemingly searching for something.

When she couldn’t find what she was looking for, she grabbed her purse, which contained her phone and keys, and threw it at Zachary. Thanks to her self-defense training, she had a good aim. Completely caught off guard, Zachary was hit square in the face. The items in her purse turned into makeshift weapons, leaving a painful mark on his lips. He shot a furious glare at Serenity. Never before had anyone disrespected him in such a way! Serenity walked over to retrieve her purse, matching his tone.

“You asked for this. You’ve condemned me based on some wild assumptions in your head without even bothering to ask for clarification. Have you always been this bossy and self-righteous?” Zachary grimaced as he touched his bruised lips, glaring at her. “What are you staring at? Is this a contest? As if I’d ever lose to you.” Serenity raised her purse defiantly. Zachary thought to himself, ‘Not this again!’ How could she be so bold as to strike him? This felt like domestic violence!

“My car broke down in the middle of the road, but fortunately, I ran into Shawn. He’s my best friend’s cousin, and I’ve known him longer than I’ve known you. We practically grew up together. Anyway, he wasn’t just going to drive past when he spotted me.”

Stranded, I found myself in quite a predicament. Fortunately, Zachary came to my rescue. He called a tow truck for me and arranged for my bike to be taken to a workshop before driving me home.

We hadn’t done anything wrong, yet it felt like he was accusing me of infidelity. “Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Perhaps you’re the one cheating on me,” I said, trying to turn the tables. Zachary was momentarily speechless. “Mr. York, you could’ve told me if you didn’t want to get married back then. I didn’t force you to sign those papers. Why do you look like I’m out to get you? I had no objections to the contract you drafted; I signed it when you asked me to. And about leaving me the house and car after the divorce? That was your proposal, not mine.”

I might as well accept your offer since you clearly see me as a scheming woman after your money. The truth is, she had no intention of keeping his house and car after their divorce. Serenity only married him to escape her sister’s place, allowing her sister some peace of mind. Those were her sole motivations.

“You seem to think I’m out looking for another guy and planning to cheat on you. You saw me and Mr. Bill together when I went with Jasmine on her blind date. I bet that’s what you were thinking,” I pointed out.

Zachary hissed back, “Trust me, I don’t get jealous.”

“Well, it sure looked like you were feeling a bit jealous,” I replied. The tension in the room began to dissipate as Serenity lightened the mood. “Uff. I could practically smell the jealousy from a mile away. I guess you’re really putting the Word of the Day to good use.”
