to the vehicle after a moment, leaving Serenity slightly puzzled.
“Are you okay?” she asked, observing his sudden change in demeanor.
Zachary nodded, a hint of a smile returning to his face. “I just forgot something,” he replied before rummaging through the glove compartment.
As Serenity waited, she reflected on their conversation. “Many couples tend to separate when faced with challenges,” she said, her voice thoughtful. “We got married without really knowing each other, and we’ve only spent two weeks together. I appreciate that you’re willing to navigate this situation alongside me.”
She was aware that the scandal could spiral out of control if it wasn’t managed properly, and the people surrounding her could easily get dragged into it.
“My sister and brother-in-law were college sweethearts, dating for years before they tied the knot. They have a son together,” Serenity continued, sharing a glimpse of her family’s dynamics. “However, my brother-in-law didn’t handle things well when he found out my sister and I were vilified online.”
Zachary took a moment to process her words before responding, “Serenity, you can’t judge every man based on your brother-in-law’s actions. That wouldn’t be fair to them, and not everyone is the same.” He considered Hank’s changing feelings toward Liberty but chose not to voice his suspicions without evidence. Deep down, however, he sensed that Hank might be up to something troubling.
“True,” Serenity conceded. Observing Liberty’s marriage made her skeptical about love and relationships. Yet, she felt fortunate to have Zachary, who, despite occasionally hurting her pride, proved to be reliable when it mattered most.
Her thoughts drifted back to Jasmine’s playful teasing. With her six-month contract with Zachary in place, perhaps she should give their relationship a real chance.
“There’s a rest stop ahead,” Zachary announced, breaking her thoughts. “Do you need to use the restroom? I want to fill up the tank.”
“Sure,” Serenity replied, feeling comfortable with the plan.
The car glided along the highway for a few minutes before they arrived at a rest area. Zachary parked the car, and they both exited the vehicle, ready to stretch their legs. However, Zachary paused and headed back to the car, leaving Serenity to wonder what he had forgotten.
Zachary washed his hands before heading to the car to call Josh. When Josh answered, Zachary spoke in a firm tone, “Josh, it’s crucial that you get those who are in the know to advocate for Serenity.” After a brief pause, Josh responded, “It’s not a big deal. I can handle it with just one phone call.” Zachary was once again resorting to serious measures over what seemed like a minor issue.
Josh had previously connected with the community during his investigation of the Hunts. “What’s Serenity planning to do?” he inquired, knowing the CEO’s wife was involved. Truthfully, he was just a bit curious.
“She’s working on gathering as much evidence as she can to demonstrate that the relatives are able to pay for the medical expenses. She plans to bring forth the signed contract and proof of the Hunts’ treatment towards her and her sister. I believe we can make a difference if the community rallies behind the girls.”
“Serenity appears calm, rational, and articulate. She’s just like you,” Josh remarked. Zachary raised an eyebrow and snapped back, “How is she like me?”
“She’s your wife. She inherited her composure from you after spending so much time together. Despite being a victim, she’s managing to hold it together. What’s wrong? Are you annoyed that I’m praising her intelligence and grace?” Josh teased.
Zachary felt the urge to end the call right then and there. “Could you send someone to the hospital to check on her grandmother’s condition?” he asked.
“Sure thing,” Josh replied readily. Then he added, “I’ve done quite a bit for you. Can I take a week off when you return?”
“You’ll be lucky to get a day off,” Zachary retorted. “People might think you’re about to get fired if you take a whole week off. Clive has been looking for any chance to get an edge on me and steal you away.”
He might be feeling disappointed that it’s not going to happen.
