After taking a few deep breaths, Lan Ruoruo said, “It’s my fault. I’ll wait here for my secretary to bring the ice pack. Then, I’ll personally apply it to Mr. Zhan’s face until the swelling goes down!”

Zhan Wei gestured for her to sit.

Lan Ruoruo sat down reluctantly.

Haitong didn’t interrupt—she simply watched the scene unfold with great interest.

The two children were watching, too.

Beibei was still too young to understand what was happening. Zhan Muchen didn’t fully grasp it either, but he knew one thing for sure—his Seventh Uncle had won.

This pretty auntie might look nice, but she was too fierce. She even hit his Seventh Uncle! Zhan Muchen decided he didn’t like her.

His father had told him not to judge people by appearances. Many women looked beautiful but had harsh hearts. When the time came for him to choose a wife, character would matter more than looks.

Zhan Muchen understood what it meant to marry a wife—it was like how his dad had married his mom.

But wasn’t he still a long way from that?

His dad said he couldn’t get married until he was at least 28 or 29 years old. He was only six this year.

That meant he’d have to wait another twenty years before marrying!

His dad always joked that he had stolen his father’s wife and kept telling him to stay away from his mom, because Mom was Dad’s wife.

But Mom was his mom too—not Dad’s mom—so why should he stay away?

He didn’t take his dad seriously. His dad was just jealous of him, probably because everyone thought he was cute and loved him.

Dad clearly favored his little sister and doted on her the most—Zhan Muchen knew that well.

Meanwhile, he was constantly being told to write a set number of characters, learn a specific amount of math, practice piano, and do kung fu. His dad always wore a stern face around him. His mom said it was like Dad was staring at someone who owed him money.

Even so, Zhan Muchen adored his little sister. She was his favorite person, too.

“Seventh Uncle,”

Zhan Muchen called out to his uncle.
Zhan Muchen called out to his Seventh Uncle.

Zhan Wei gently patted his head and said, “Seventh Uncle is a real man—generous and magnanimous. He won’t hold a grudge against this aunt. As long as she apologizes, he’ll forgive her.”

“Baby feels bad for Uncle Qi. His face is all swollen,” Zhan Muchen said, glaring at Lan Ruoruo. Then he added, “Auntie, why did you hit my Seventh Uncle? My dad says no matter what, you shouldn’t hit people.”

Though he remembered his father had also said that if someone crosses the line, it’s okay to teach them a lesson—he wisely chose not to say that part.

Lan Ruoruo replied awkwardly, “Uh… kid, this is grown-up business. You shouldn’t ask too many questions.”

“Your Seventh Uncle and I are, well… you could say we’re rivals. And who shows mercy to a rival?”

Zhan Muchen understood that much.

His great-grandmother and his parents had taught him that being soft on your enemies could end up hurting you.

“What did my Seventh Uncle do to you?” the little boy asked. “Can’t you and Uncle Qi make peace and be friends?”

In kindergarten, when kids fought, the teacher always asked them to shake hands to make up and stay friends afterward.

Lan Ruoruo looked at Zhan Wei. He looked back at her, then placed a piece of dessert in front of Zhan Muchen and said, “Baby, eat your dessert. You don’t understand what’s going on between your Aunt Lan and me, so don’t ask too many questions.”

Zhan Muchen nodded and said “oh,” then obediently started eating his snacks without pressing further.

“Hug, hug.”

Little Beibei suddenly stood up.

Both Haitong and Zhan Wei quickly reached out to steady her, afraid she might fall. But to their surprise, she extended her arms toward Lan Ruoruo, asking to be picked up.

Haitong smiled and pulled her hand back, then said to Lan Ruoruo, “Miss Lan, it looks like my daughter really likes you. This is her first time meeting you, and she already wants a hug.”
