Married at First Sight Chapter 4517
“Alright, alright, I won’t say another word,” Lan’s mother said with a smile, seeing her daughter at a loss for words. She turned her attention back to carefully applying her daughter’s makeup.
When she finished, she stepped back to admire her work and beamed with satisfaction. “My daughter is beautiful. With makeup, she looks even more radiant—like a fairy.”
“Mom, you should say I’m beautiful without makeup. Saying I’m only beautiful with it makes it sound like I depend on it,” Lan Ruoruo replied, glancing at herself in the mirror. Her mother’s makeup skills were far better than hers—no surprise, considering she’d carried herself with elegance and grace her whole life.
“My daughter is stunning with or without makeup. You could charm a whole truckload of men,” her mother said affectionately.
Then she asked, “What jewelry are you wearing tonight?”

“I prefer to keep things simple. I don’t like anything too flashy. Honestly, I’m so beautiful that jewelry doesn’t make much difference. My elegance is natural—I don’t need anything gaudy to enhance it.”
Lan Ruoruo opened the dressing table drawer, took out a small jewelry box, pulled out a pair of earrings, and put them on in front of the mirror. Then she selected a necklace and fastened it. She skipped the rings—she disliked wearing jewelry on her hands, saying it always got in the way when typing or signing documents.
“You always wear the same two pieces to parties. You never switch it up. That necklace is tiny and plain, and the earrings are too understated. You have so much jewelry—why not wear any of it?” her mother asked, unable to resist a bit of nagging.
“Since you were born, your elders gave you jewelry on every birthday and important occasion. I kept it all safe. When you got older, I even had a jewelry room organized just for you. Your collection puts some boutique stores to shame. And yet, you let it all collect dust. What, are you saving it for your daughter someday?”
Lan Ruoruo laughed. “Mom, I’m not even married yet—where would the daughter come from?”
“Who knows?” she added. “Maybe I won’t have a daughter—or any child. Maybe I’ll never get married. But I do have nieces and nephews. I’ll give the jewelry to my niece as a dowry when the time comes.”
“I really don’t like it. I just can’t force myself to wear something I don’t like.”
Lan Ruoruo admired the beauty of those jewels, but when it came to actually wearing them, she wasn’t interested.
She was a unique kind of young lady.
Although she owned a vast collection of valuable jewelry, she kept them neatly stored in her collection and almost never wore them.
At work, she wore no jewelry at all, presenting herself in a simple, understated way.
Lan’s mother could only sigh—there wasn’t much she could do.
That’s simply how her daughter was.
Everyone has their own preferences.
Her daughter had a passion for business and making money. The Lan family was already wealthy, yet she still felt it wasn’t enough—she constantly wanted to earn more.
“Don’t say you won’t get married. People should do what’s appropriate for their age. When the time comes, you should find a good man, settle down, and have children—ideally two. One child always ends up a little lonely.”
“No matter how great your nieces and nephews are, they’re not your own. They have their own parents to care for and be filial to. How many would actually look after their aunt in the long run?”
“If you’re just saying that to me, that’s fine. But don’t say things like that to your grandfather. He’s been so worried about your marriage that he even regrets raising you to be so capable.”
“He says you’ve been raised too well, and now your standards are too high for you to find someone.”
After all, there were few young people in the city who could measure up to her two children.
Her son was easier—at least he was willing to fall in love and wasn’t overly selective. As long as the woman had a decent background and good character, he’d be open to marriage.
But her daughter’s standards were sky-high. She always thought no one was good enough, never found anyone appealing, and dismissed many young men who were perfectly suited for the Lan family, insisting they weren’t her type.
