“She emailed the teacher and said she was going to be absent for a few days.”

My heart sank. She was taking time off school, and she hadn’t told me about it. I took a shaky breath and nodded.

“Okay, thanks,” I said softly.

Stasia nodded back and quickly walked away.

I looked around at everyone else, but they quickly turned away from me. Frowning, I stood up and grabbed all my things, shoving them into my backpack. I picked up my coffee cup and the one I had taken for Nan. Then, I walked toward the door.

I had enough. I was determined to go to Nan’s apartment later and find out where my best friend had gone.
