“Oh, Goddess, Judy. No, of course not!”

“I’m having a hard time believing that…” I admitted.

She nodded solemnly.

“I get that,” she murmured. “And maybe, at first, I did target you. But I quickly realized you’re an incredible person, and I was lucky to get to know you. There wasn’t a moment I didn’t feel guilty about what I was doing. You were always my friend, Judy. I swear—none of our friendship was fake.”

I stayed quiet, letting her words sink in. I wanted to believe her—really, I did—but the hurt was still fresh. I wasn’t sure if I could trust her again…

“Why were you talking to Ethan?” I asked her.

Her cheeks turned red, and for a second, I didn’t think she was going to answer.

“Nan saw you with him at the coffee shop,” I added, my voice laced with concern. The idea that she might be seeing him behind my back made my stomach twist.

“He’s switching his allegiance to my father,” she explained. “I was only passing along a message from my dad. It wasn’t anything serious, I promise.”

“Ethan’s switching his allegiance to Levi Churchill?” I asked. “But his family’s the Beta line of Redmoon.”

She nodded.

“That’s why it’s still a secret,” she said. “I don’t even think his family knows. But my father promised him Alpha status, and I was checking in on when Ethan plans to make the move. My dad needs that information to move forward.”

I thought about what she said—and it did make sense. I should’ve known she wouldn’t be seeing Ethan after everything he’d done to me.

“Okay,” I said softly, finally. “I believe you.”

Relief washed over her face, and she let out a breath.

“Thank you,” she said.

Before either of us could speak again, my phone chimed. I frowned, pulling it from my pocket to see Nan’s name lighting up my screen in a text message.

I opened it.

Nan: Girl, did you see this?? It’s all over the news!

An article was attached. My heart pounded as I tapped the link, a sense of dread creeping in. The second the page loaded, my stomach dropped.

f*ck.
Gavin’s POV

“I want to know who released this article,” I said, slamming my fist on the desk. Taylor and my head Gamma, Derek, both flinched. “We should’ve had people on this already. This never should’ve gone public.”

“The source was anonymous,” Taylor replied. “I’ve already contacted your PA and PI—Private Attorney and Private Investigator.”

“These need to be pulled immediately,” I said through clenched teeth.

“Yes, Alpha,” they echoed in unison.

Just then, my phone started ringing. I cursed under my breath.

“For f*ck’s sake, what now?” I muttered, hitting the answer button without checking the caller ID. “Yes?”

“Is that any way to speak to your mother?” came the sharp reply. I groaned inwardly—this was the last person I needed right now.

“Sorry, I’m kind of in the middle of a crisis,” I said, forcing my tone to soften.

“Yes, I can see that. Do you have any idea how this reflects on the Landry family?” she snapped. “You were caught kissing her during the competition, Gavin. They’re accusing you of favoritism.”

My stomach twisted. If they thought Judy had won because we were involved, they wouldn’t just strip her of the title—they’d blacklist her completely. I couldn’t let that happen.

“I’m handling it,” I said through gritted teeth.

“You’d better be,” she replied firmly. “We can’t let this ruin our reputation, Gavin. You know how important our image is—and how much weight the Gamma competition carries. You’ve painted a target on that girl’s back.”

Guilt gnawed at me. I should’ve been more careful. Why hadn’t I thought someone might take pictures? I was careless, and now Judy was going to pay the price.

“I’ll fix this,” I said—more to myself than to her.

There was a pause, then she sighed.

“Gavin, once you do—and I know you will, because you’re a Landry, and we fix our mistakes—just know this: Judy Montague doesn’t belong in our world. After everything that’s happened… you need to stop seeing her. For good.”
