Judy’s POV

“You can’t tell me who I can and can’t see, Dad,” I said, arms crossed tightly over my chest. I’m usually obedient and don’t talk back to my parents, but right now, I was furious. My father had seriously overstepped—and then had the audacity to hang up on Gavin Landry, the most powerful Lycan chairman in the world.

He’s lucky Gavin isn’t storming in right now to tear his head off. Still, my father remained unfazed, meeting my glare with the same stubborn look, his own arms crossed. His eyes were narrowed, lips pressed into a thin, hard line.

“I think this is just a lot for us to process,” my mother said, standing up. “We need some time to think things through.”

Tears stung the corners of my eyes, but I blinked them away.

“I need to go for a walk,” my father finally said after a long silence.

Without another word, he left the room, leaving my mother and me in heavy silence. For a long time, neither of us spoke. My heart was in my throat—I couldn’t believe he had just walked out like that. I wanted to cry, to scream… anything. But instead, I just felt numb.

I hated these feelings I had for Gavin. I hated how I lost control around him. Most of all, I hated that I was falling in love with him.

“Just give him some time,” my mother finally said, sitting beside me, her gaze soft. “It’s a lot to take in for one night.”

I nodded, understanding her perspective, though I couldn’t find the words to respond.

“How long have you been seeing him?” she asked gently.

“I’ve been tutoring his son since last year,” I said. “I guess it started around then…”

She was quiet, taking it in.

“A whole year?” she asked.

I bit my lower lip and nodded.

“It just kind of happened,” I admitted. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, Mom…”

A few minutes later, my father came rushing back into the house, phone in hand, stopping directly in front of my mother.
“I just got an alert—a prisoner has escaped,” he told her.

My mother’s face went pale.

“What prisoner?” she asked. My heart thudded violently in my chest as panic surged through me. I was on edge, clinging to every word my father said; none of it felt real.

“There weren’t many details, but… here’s a photo,” he said, holding out his phone. The moment I saw the image, my stomach dropped. “Her name is Samantha Churchill.”

Sammy…

“She escaped?” I asked, my voice coming out hoarser than I expected.

They both turned to look at me.

“Do you know her?” my father asked, brows furrowed.

I let out a shaky breath, my heart pounding in my chest. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Sammy had escaped…

I’d just spoken to her earlier that evening. She’d helped me understand her side of the story a little better. I didn’t see her as some villain trying to betray me anymore. So why would she run?

“I have to go,” I said, heading for the door.

“Excuse me?” my father snapped, nearly shouting. “You’re not going anywhere. Not after everything we learned tonight—and especially not after a prison break.”

“She didn’t escape from prison. She was being held at the Landry villa. And no offense, Dad, but I’m an adult. Who I see or don’t see isn’t your concern,” I said, my tone flat.
