Ma Lan heard Xiao Changkun mention that her calf was still twitching and painful. She frowned and asked, “Xiao Changkun, did you go for a run with me behind?”
Xiao Changkun replied, “What does it matter if I went for a walk? Do I have to report to you?”
Ma Lan scoffed, “You’re already past your prime. What are you still running for? Are you trying to relive your youth?”
Xiao Changkun shot back, “What does that have to do with you? Why are you so concerned?” He then glanced at the crutches on the dining table and said with sarcasm, “Oh, I see. Your legs aren’t working well, so you can’t go for a walk?”
Charlie Wade, overhearing their argument, chimed in, “Mom and Dad, you both need to calm down. You’re just going back and forth, and it’s not helping anyone.”
Xiao Churan, who was cooking noodles, added without looking up, “Honey, you have no idea how hard it is to get through this meal. They’ve been arguing for over an hour, and I can’t calm them down anymore.”
Ma Lan, feeling frustrated, said, “I’m not trying to blame Xiao Changkun. The problem is that he talks too much. My leg is my biggest issue; I’ve broken it twice. He doesn’t care about me at all. And now I’m being ridiculed. Who do you think you’re bullying?”
Xiao Changkun responded coldly, “What does your broken leg have to do with me? I didn’t break it for you. Besides, you didn’t even mention it when we were talking earlier. Don’t try to make me feel guilty.”
Ma Lan, feeling desperate, exclaimed, “Am I trying to make you feel guilty? Xiao Changkun, you really are impossible!”
Xiao Changkun was frustrated as he confronted Ma Lan. “You think I forgot how Gao Junwei’s actions left me paralyzed? I waited for you in the hospital while you were busy with your own things. If you’re so busy, why don’t you just leave me alone?”
With a smirk, Xiao Changkun continued, “When I got hurt, who was working hard to find me a great doctor? It was my wonderful son-in-law, Charlie Wade!” He gestured toward Charlie, who stood nearby. “If it weren’t for him, I’d still be stuck in that hospital bed.”
Xiao Changkun then turned to Ma Lan and asked sharply, “You say you’re busy? Busy doing what? Cheating a girl out of her money? I know what you’re up to!”
“Stop talking nonsense!” Ma Lan yelled back, clearly caught off guard. “What do you mean I cheated anyone?”
Xiao Changkun rolled his eyes. “Oh please. When I was recovering, the doctor said I needed to stay in the hospital for just two more days. But you took away that girl’s check. If I remember right, it was for at least 170,000 yuan, wasn’t it?”
Ma Lan was at a loss for words, her face a mix of anger and embarrassment.
Xiao Changkun couldn’t help but mock her. “If I were like you, after breaking my leg, the first thing I’d do is scam a girl out of some cash. But I’m not like that. I have integrity, you know?”
Furious, Ma Lan grabbed her crutches and swung them at Xiao Changkun. “Integrity? Let’s see how you talk about integrity when I break your legs!” she shouted.
Charlie quickly stepped in, looking annoyed. “Alright, that’s enough! You can’t just say whatever you want!”
“You two will practice martial arts at home as soon as you get back. Remember, Churan and I will be there too,” Ma Lan said.
When she noticed that Charlie Wade looked a bit upset, she quickly laughed and added, “Good son-in-law, please don’t be angry. It’s not aimed at you; it’s all about Xiao Changkun’s dog.”
