After hanging up the phone, Charlie Wade turned to Lin Wan’er and asked, “Ms. Lin, you must have looked into the university and major that Inspector Li is recommending you, right?”

Lin Wan’er had accomplished a lot in her life and had earned many degrees, so it wasn’t surprising that she had studied criminology at some point.

With a smile, Lin Wan’er replied to Charlie Wade, “I’ve researched the school, but not the major.”

She then explained, “The UCI that Inspector Li mentioned is the University of California, Irvine. The school started as California College, and I was the very first student there, as well as the first Chinese student.”

Charlie Wade nodded, seeming not surprised. He said with a smile, “I figured you must have a connection to that school.”

Then he asked, “By the way, what year did you study at California College?”

Lin Wan’er paused to think.

“It’s been a long time, and I don’t remember it very clearly,” she said uncertainly. “But it was before the Civil War, because I left North America after it started.”

She paused and added, “I think it was around 1854 or 1855…”

Charlie Wade coughed twice, feeling a bit awkward. “Ahem… I knew it was a long time ago, but I didn’t expect it to be that far back…”

Lin Wan’er smiled. “Even though you think it’s a long time ago, I was already over 200 years old then. During that time, many state universities were being established in the United States. Curious, Charlie Wade looked up the university’s website. In the history section, he found the group photo of the earliest students. The image, taken over a hundred years ago, was faded and yellowed. However, Charlie Wade spotted Lin Wan’er among the many men in Western clothing. In the photo, she looked quite thin, and the yellow tint made her resemble an Indian girl.

Charlie was only able to recognize Lin Wan’er because she had pointed herself out. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have noticed her at all just by looking at the picture.

After looking closely at the group photo, Charlie Wade was surprised. “It seems there are only a few female students in this school,” he said.

“That’s right,” Lin Wan’er replied. “Back then, men and women were not treated equally. Women’s roles were not valued highly, and only a few were allowed to go to university.”

As she spoke, Lin Wan’er pointed at a middle-aged white man in the photo. “This man was a very respected professor and one of the founders of the university. Interestingly, he was an orphan raised in the UK. When I brought him to North America, I became known as his adopted daughter. Later, when I went to Japan, he even wrote a letter of recommendation for me to study there.”

Charlie Wade sighed, “Miss Lin, your life sounds so rich and colorful.”
