Evan had a pleasant demeanor among his brothers, but he could still be serious at work, leaving the company employees with an impression of formality. Behind closed doors, they often remarked that he resembled his eldest cousin, Zachary.
Although they had never met Zachary in person, they had all heard that he was aloof, typically maintaining a stern expression and a very serious demeanor.
Recalling Evan’s comment that the girl in red was there to collect debts, even Evan himself had to smile when faced with the creditor.
This led them to wonder just how much debt their boss owed to this girl.
Once the door to the general manager’s office closed, everyone filed into the elevator one after another.
“Is there any issue with our company?”
Captain Li inquired of the front desk. He was responsible solely for security and assumed the front desk would be more informed about the company’s internal matters.
The front desk responded, “What problems could our company have? Everyone continues to work as usual every day, and sometimes even has to work overtime on weekends, which indicates that business is thriving.
Salaries, bonuses, and various benefits are disbursed as normal. Daily afternoon tea is still provided, and the snacks are still from the same vendor. Everything seems fine.”
The front desk felt reassured that since wages and benefits had not been cut, there was no cause for concern about potential layoffs.
“Mr. York mentioned that the girl came to collect debts. I—”
“I suspected something was amiss with our company’s operations. After all, how could Mr. York be in debt?”
At the front desk, a staff member replied, “What you’re saying makes sense, but everything within the company seems normal. It’s hard to believe Mr. York would run away. The York family is behind him, and they are the wealthiest in Wiltspoon. Mr. York has more than just this company; he oversees several projects and branches of the York Corporation. It’s reasonable to assume he wouldn’t be short on funds.”
The staff member continued, “If anything were to happen, Mr. York would ensure we receive our wages. The York Corporation is there to support him. Captain Li, you don’t need to worry. As long as we keep working, we will receive the pay we’re owed.”
Suddenly, a security guard chimed in, “When Mr. York mentioned being in debt, it might not be financial. Perhaps it’s a romantic debt.”
Everyone turned to look at him.
The security guard continued, somewhat nervously, “Why are you all staring at me? Mr. York is young, attractive, and comes from a good family. Many girls must like him. We don’t know if he has feelings for anyone. Could it be that he has a romantic obligation?”
He added, “Did you notice how upset the girl in red looked? Mr. York was smiling and was very patient with her. From my perspective, he seems to have feelings for her.”
He concluded, “When you like someone, you tend to be forgiving, even if they appear unhappy.”
Everyone exchanged glances, and they found his reasoning quite plausible.
Evan, however, paid little attention to his employees’ opinions about his relationship with Fox.
In fact, he welcomed the idea of them being seen as a couple.
After inviting Fox in, he asked, “Would you like tea or warm water?”
“I want to drink your blood!” Fox replied, her tone filled with resentment as she walked over to the sofa and sat down.
Leaning back against the sofa, she glared at Evan with her striking eyes. Evan thought she looked quite pretty when she was angry, so he poured her a glass of warm water. He worried that if she drank tea, it might interfere with her lunch break. Regardless of whether she took a break or not, he decided against letting her have tea. If she were in the habit of taking a lunch break and a cup of tea disturbed her, she would only be angrier with him.
Evan then said, “It’s not impossible for you to drink my blood. I can get you a knife, and you can do it yourself. If you drink a glass of my blood, I won’t die; I’d just lose some blood and look a bit pale. You can always make me some soup to replenish it.”
Fox replied angrily, “I’d drain all your blood and throw you into the deep mountains and forests to feed the wild beasts.”
Evan smiled. “You’re not really that bad; you’re just pretending to be. I see through it.”
