Carrie’s probing questions left the stand-in speechless. She was merely a substitute, and even Carrie, the genuine owner, couldn’t aspire to marry into the York family.
Furthermore, Carrie had offended Callum, which eliminated her chances of entering the York family.
With a sense of regret, she remarked, “I had hoped to benefit from Serenity’s good fortune and become a young lady in the York family. I guess that was just a dream.”
Carrie smiled, “I can understand that. Any girl who has encountered a young master of the York family would likely be tempted. But, unfortunately, they are not typical. While most people develop romantic feelings as they grow older, they remain indifferent. When it comes time to marry, the old lady orchestrates everything, and they dutifully pursue their assigned wives. Everyone respects the old lady.”
Carrie wasn’t sure if her last remark was a compliment or sarcasm; it seemed to embody a blend of resentment, hatred, and jealousy.
“You suffered on my behalf and endured a few slaps. I informed Mr. Labbe, and he will compensate you. Just tell me your price. How much should I pay for each slap? I’ll transfer the money to you right away.”
Carrie’s words snapped the stand-in back to reality. She still had a chance to pursue the York family men, as Mr. Labbe had promised she could marry any young master after finishing her work. Yet, she was merely a stand-in.
The stand-in replied, “Of course. I’m just an actor. There’s no reason for me to be hit. You can give me $1,000 per slap. Was it three or four slaps? Maybe five or six? I lost count after the beating. Anyway, it was about five or six, or perhaps seven or…
“Eight,” she replied.
Carrie responded, “You’re exaggerating. Fine, I’ll give you $5,000.”
Without negotiating further, she transferred the amount.
The stand-in eagerly accepted the payment. Despite the pain from the slaps, each one brought in over $1,000, and she felt she could tolerate a few more.
Usually, she played small roles in film and television. If she was fortunate, she might land a minor part that covered her living expenses and provided some extra cash for the day.
As an actress, she aspired to be a leading lady one day, leveraging her beauty and acting talent. However, in the film and television industry, beauty was prevalent. Her looks were merely average and didn’t stand out.
Working as Carrie’s stand-in was lucrative, especially with the added compensation for the physical hits. It was far more profitable than being an extra.
