Kathryn chuckled in surprise. “You’re blushing! I thought nothing could get to you. What did my mother say to make you blush like that? Did she promise you a beautiful woman in exchange for helping her drug me?”
Pedro responded, “That’s what Madam Farrell said, but it wasn’t an arrangement—it was a trust.”
Kathryn’s smile faded. “Did my mother really say that?”
Pedro nodded, his expression serious. “Madam Farrell mentioned that you and I are of similar age, and I’ll be yours for life. If you care for me, she’d allow us to be together. If she can’t pass the family leadership to you, she asked me to take you away with the money she set aside for you. She suggested we go somewhere where no one knows us, start anew, and find happiness together. She made me promise to never let you down or allow you to suffer.”
Pedro took Kathryn’s hand, their fingers intertwining. “Miss, I’ll never let you down—not in this life. Regardless of your thoughts about me, I will stay by your side and ensure you never suffer.”
“Madam Farrell believes I’m a good match since I have no family, so you won’t have to worry about in-laws. She said you’re stubborn and might struggle with that. Despite your differences, you’re still her daughter. Even though you’ve hurt her, she wants to pave the way for your future.”
Pedro’s voice softened as he added, “She also mentioned that you didn’t want to settle down or get married. She said if you needed a successor, you could simply find a man, get pregnant, and then part ways with him afterward.”
At this, Pedro looked at Kathryn with a sympathetic expression, as if uncertain about his place in her life.
Kathryn laughed, pulling her hand away.
She playfully pinched his face and ear. “Don’t look at me like that! I haven’t even slept with you yet. You’re acting as if I’ve wronged you.”
Pedro smiled. “We’ll discuss that later.”
Kathryn’s tone shifted to a serious one. “Did my cousin Audrey mention when she’s coming?”
Pedro responded, “I believe it will be in the next two days.”
Kathryn then inquired, “What about my aunt’s assistant? What’s his name? Is he coming too?”
Pedro’s demeanor became serious. “His last name is Jimenez.”
“Jimenez?”
“Yes. Very few people remember his name. I had to ask all the elders in your clan to find out. No one recalls his full name.”
Kathryn replied, “He disappeared from Jensburg decades ago. Those who knew where he went are either dead or missing. Even the clan elders don’t know much, as they were just teenagers when my aunt got into trouble.”
