Chapter 3608
Mr. Dunn’s failure to answer Clarissa’s call made her anxious. He had never ignored her calls before, so his silence indicated that he might be injured, in a difficult situation, or preoccupied with something urgent.
She called again, and after a moment, Mr. Dunn picked up.
“Mr. Dunn, did something go wrong?” Clarissa asked in a low voice.
“No,” Mr. Dunn replied.
“No? I just called you, and you didn’t answer. Why didn’t you follow our plan?” Clarissa pressed, her tone laced with suspicion.
Mr. Dunn explained, “I was busy evacuating everyone and couldn’t answer. It appears they figured out our plan and implemented countermeasures. If we proceed now, we’ll fail and get caught, which would be disastrous for us.”
“So, you’re saying they have people near the cemetery, waiting for us to make a move so they can catch us?” Clarissa inquired.
“Yes,” Mr. Dunn confirmed.
Clarissa’s expression grew more serious. “We planned this meticulously, just the two of us. How could they know? Is there a traitor among your team?”
It was frustrating to lose such a promising opportunity. When she next encountered Mr. Jimenez, he would likely have increased protection, making it even more difficult to act without endangering herself. The only remaining option would be to go down with them, which was the worst-case scenario she wanted to avoid.
“Investigate for a traitor,” Clarissa ordered. “I want to know if someone has betrayed us or if they are simply that powerful.”
Mr. Dunn doubted there was a traitor but couldn’t rule it out. If there wasn’t, it would imply that their opponents had an exceptionally strong information network, which was even more alarming. He hoped it was a betrayal rather than having to confront such a formidable enemy.
“Ma’am, I’ll…”
“I’ll find out,” Mr. Dunn assured her. “Have you confirmed it was Mr. Jimenez?”
“I would recognize him even if he turned to ashes,” Clarissa replied. “It’s definitely him.”
Mr. Jimenez was the only man Clarissa had ever truly loved, though he never reciprocated her feelings. To him, she always remained just a child, even as she matured. The age gap of over 20 years didn’t bother her, but it did affect him. While other men would have appreciated her youth, Mr. Jimenez remained indifferent. Nonetheless, she felt an undeniable attraction to him.
Clarissa continued, “Audrey mentioned she has both evidence and witnesses. Is there anyone else besides Mr. Jimenez? Investigate thoroughly, and remember to only resort to the worst option when there are no alternatives left.”
