Chapter 3864
As soon as the car came to a stop, Mrs. Lewis approached with a smile, opening the door.
“Sonny!” Her face brightened as she reached in to lift him out of the car.
“Auntie!” Liberty warmly greeted her.
“Liberty, welcome back,” Mrs. Lewis replied, still beaming as she hugged Sonny close. She held his hand as they walked toward the house. “Did you have fun with your auntie, Sonny?” she asked.
“Yes, I had lots of fun! Grandma, did you miss me?” Sonny grinned in response.
Mrs. Lewis chuckled, her eyes soft with affection. “Of course, Sonny. I missed you so much! As soon as I heard you were back, I called your Uncle Duncan right away and asked him to bring you over. I’ve prepared all your favorite foods, drinks, and lots of new toys. I even called your cousins, so they’ll be here soon to play with you. It’s going to be lively—you won’t feel lonely at all!”
Her youngest grandson, Rocco (Duncan’s third brother’s youngest child), was especially excited about Sonny’s visit. At nearly eleven, Rocco adored Sonny and often boasted to his friends about his “adorable” little cousin. Ever since he learned that Sonny would soon officially be part of the family, he could hardly wait to show him off.
If it weren’t for winter break, Mrs. Lewis was certain Rocco would have tried to sneak Sonny into school in his oversized backpack!
“Sonny’s here!” Mr. Lewis called out, stepping out of the house to greet them with a warm smile. He reached out, ready to scoop Sonny up, but Mrs. Lewis playfully dodged his hands.
“Hold on, I just got my turn!” she teased.
“But I haven’t held him yet!” Mr. Lewis protested with a grin. “He’s grown a bit since last time, and you’ll get tired.”
“Last time, you’ll get tired; let me take over—strong man here!” Still, Mrs. Lewis held Sonny close, laughing as they hurried inside with him between them, both reluctant to let him go.
Watching the scene unfold, Duncan turned to Liberty with a chuckle. “Look at them—they’re so wrapped up in Sonny! Mom scooped him up before he even had a chance to step out of the car. She didn’t even glance my way!” He laughed, “It’s like I’ve been replaced.”
Liberty smiled softly. “They haven’t seen him in a while. He really brings them joy.” She understood, however, that Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were making a point. By showering Sonny with affection, they were demonstrating to Liberty that she could feel secure about joining their family. Even though Sonny wasn’t their biological grandson, the Lewis family fully embraced him and treated him as their own.
The affection shown by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis was not only genuine but also reassuring. Liberty could see how much they cherished their son, Duncan, and how deeply they wanted him to be happy. Since Duncan’s heart was firmly set on her, they had chosen to welcome both Liberty and Sonny with open arms, without any reservations.
Liberty felt a surge of gratitude. After her painful divorce, she had once doubted she would ever want to remarry, fearing another heartbreak and unsure how a new marriage would affect Sonny. However, the Lewis family’s acceptance and love had erased her doubts, providing her with peace of mind and a renewed sense of hope for a joyful future with Duncan.”
