Chapter 3874
After the New Year, Liberty anticipated being overwhelmed with work. Even if she brought Sonny to Jensburg, she wouldn’t be able to care for him personally, which meant he would have to stay with the nanny. It seemed more practical to leave him in Wiltspoon, where he would be surrounded by family and friends. Sonny would likely prefer to stay in Wiltspoon for the time being.
“What time should we meet tomorrow?” Duncan asked, shifting the topic.
Liberty smiled. “Any time during work hours.” She paused before adding, “Let’s say nine in the morning. Seren and Zachary will be here to watch over Sonny. I’ll head out, and you can meet me at the entrance to the Civil Affairs Bureau.”
Duncan shook his head. “No, I want to go with you.” He didn’t want to wait outside; he wanted to walk into the Civil Affairs Bureau together with Liberty.
“Let’s bring Sonny, too. Starting tomorrow, we’re a family of three.” Tomorrow, Duncan would officially become Sonny’s father, even if just as a stepfather. The thought filled him with joy—he hadn’t anticipated becoming a father to the boy he had grown so fond of.
Liberty thought it over and then agreed, “Alright, let’s take Sonny with us.”
“Oh, and after we get married, Sonny will keep his last name. Hank made that a condition during the divorce, and I gave my word. Sonny’s last name will remain Brown.”
Duncan nodded. “I understand. No matter how much I love Sonny, I’m not his biological father. Hank still plays a role in Sonny’s life. He pays child support and visits him when he can, which is part of being a father. Being his biological dad isn’t something you can just step into because…”
“You don’t need to. I don’t require Sonny to take my last name—he will always be Hank’s son.” Liberty offered him a grateful smile. “Thank you, Duncan, for understanding.”
“We’re about to be husband and wife; there’s no need to thank me,” he replied. Liberty smiled and paused pushing the wheelchair.
Duncan glanced back at her, and at that moment, she leaned in, placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. He instinctively pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as he kissed her.
When their kiss broke, Duncan spoke softly and sincerely, “Liberty, will you stay with me tonight?” He yearned to begin their life together. Although they would be married by tomorrow, he wished the day could come a little sooner.
Liberty’s cheeks flushed slightly. Despite being a mother, Duncan’s love awakened a shyness in her that she hadn’t felt in years. Love is different when you are cherished deeply, held tenderly, and cared for—it brings a gentle warmth.
“I should go back tonight,” she replied softly. “But tomorrow night, you can stay with me, or I can stay at your place.”
“Deal,” Duncan grinned. “I’ll come to your place tomorrow night. It doesn’t matter where I am, as long as I’m with you.”
Duncan lived in the same villa community as Liberty. Anywhere she was—that was home for him.
