Chapter 3929
Evan closed the door behind him and paused before stepping forward. His eyes fixated on Fox, quiet yet intense. He had missed her so much that it was driving him crazy. This girl was truly ruthless—how could she stay away for so long? Didn’t she want her things back? If not, he’d keep them as mementos of her. When he took her belongings, he hadn’t intended to return them anyway. Sure, it was petty, but she had provoked him first. Taking her things was merely his way of fighting back.
“It’s freezing, and it’s late. You came all the way here to see me. So, tell me—do you miss me, or is there something else on your mind?”
Evan finally moved, taking deliberate steps toward Fox. A faint smile graced his lips, but his deep, smoldering eyes were fixed on her, unwilling to look away for even a moment.
Fox crossed her arms, her voice sharp yet steady. “It’s freezing, Evan. Why are you in Huyoniville instead of spending the New Year with your family?”
Evan set his car keys on the table, his expression softening. “Because I missed you.”
Fox raised an eyebrow and countered, “And why do you think I’m in Huyoniville? My home isn’t even here.”
Evan smirked, undeterred. “I met you here—not just once, but several times. Regardless of whether you’re from this city, you seem to enjoy spending time here. So, I came to try my luck. How did you know I was here?”
Fox stood confidently. “Getting information about you? That’s not exactly difficult.”
Evan tilted his head, teasing. “What were you doing just now?”
She replied casually, “Just minding my own business. And you?”
Evan’s grin widened.
“I went out to explore the streets, hoping to encounter a lovely night wanderer. If I had known you were coming, I would have waited for you right here,” he said, a playful glint in his eyes. “How about a midnight snack? My treat.”
Fox shook her head. “It’s too cold, and it’s too late. Besides, I’m not hungry.” Without another word, she turned and sank into the cushions of the sofa.
Evan followed her, trying to sit beside her, but she instinctively kicked at him. He dodged, smirking at her defenses but respecting her space.
“Can’t I even sit on my own sofa? This is my room,” Evan muttered, clearly pretending to be hurt. He settled into a single chair across from her, his expression a mix of wounded and playful. “You’re so mean! What did I even do?”
Fox ignored his theatrics, her tone resolute. “Evan, cut the act. Tell me the real reason you came to Huyoniville.”
She wasn’t falling for his charming facade; it was evident he was there for Abby. Even if she was Abby, the way he shifted his attention so effortlessly made her feel like he was pursuing a shadow of someone else.
Did he think she was that difficult to win over? After all this time, he still didn’t know her real name or her true self. Had he given up?
And now, was he circling back to Abby after realizing her value again? Did he believe he could pursue her as if she were some second chance?
The sting of his earlier rejection lingered. He had bluntly told her before that he couldn’t fall for her, no matter how hard he tried. He apologized for giving her hope, for sparking her heart only to snuff it out.
“Abby is a good girl,” he had said, leaving her feeling like he was chasing a shadow of someone else. Did he really think she was that hard to win over?
Despite all this time, he still didn’t know her real name or what she truly looked like. Had he given up? Now, what was prompting him to return to Abby after recognizing her worth once more? Did he believe he could pursue her as if she were merely a second chance?
The memory of his earlier rejection still stung. He had told her directly that he couldn’t fall for her, no matter how hard he tried. He had apologized for giving her hope, for igniting her heart only to snuff it out.
“Abby is a good girl,” he had said. “But you deserve someone better—someone who is more suited to you.”
Fair enough. Abby had her pride as well. Even if she had feelings for him, she couldn’t hold on to a man who failed to recognize her value. So, she left Wiltspoon, taking everything with her—including him.
