Married At First Sight Chapter 3986
Chapter 3986
Serenity explained, “The summers here are long and unbearably hot, and even winters aren’t very cold. In this climate, consuming too many high-calorie foods isn’t beneficial for anyone.”
She recalled how friends from other cities often mentioned that residents of Wiltspoon tended to avoid spicy food. It wasn’t that they disliked it; it was simply too overwhelming for them.
Sonny appeared to nod in understanding, but Serenity knew he was still too young to fully grasp her explanation, so she let it go.
Just then, Duncan’s voice echoed through the house. “Serenity, has Sonny’s fever gone down?”
Duncan was being assisted up the steps by his bodyguard, his voice filled with concern before he even reached the door.
Serenity gently set Sonny down.
“Uncle Duncan!” Sonny exclaimed joyfully as he ran to him.
Duncan lifted Sonny into his arms as the bodyguard brought over his wheelchair.
After taking a seat, Duncan placed his hand on Sonny’s forehead and frowned slightly.
“You still feel a bit warm,” he murmured.
Serenity approached and reassured him, “His fever has decreased but isn’t completely gone. I just checked—it’s 37.8 degrees. Once he takes another dose of medicine, it should be gone entirely. Brother Duncan, you didn’t need to come all this way. I have everything under control.”
She hadn’t informed Zachary about Sonny’s fever because she didn’t want to disrupt his work.
Duncan shook his head. “I couldn’t sit still. I had to check on both of you. The company can manage without me for a little while.”
For Duncan, Sonny’s well-being was more important than any business deal.
Snuggled in Duncan’s arms, Sonny listened quietly to their conversation. He then looked up and said softly, “Uncle Duncan, I miss my mom.”
Duncan’s expression softened, and his voice became gentle. “How about this—once you’re feeling better, we’ll visit your mom after school on Friday, okay? But first, you need to take your medicine like a good boy so you can recover quickly.” Sonny nodded obediently, his small face serious. He understood that his illness was partly his own doing—he always kicked off the blanket at night and had eaten too much fried chicken.
While Serenity was speaking with Duncan, Jasmine called to check on Sonny. When Serenity assured her that the fever was subsiding, Jasmine finally sounded relieved. When the kitchen finished preparing the porridge, Duncan insisted on feeding Sonny himself. Before he could start, however, Mrs. and Mr. Lewis arrived with Audrey, Darrell, and Mr. Jimenez in tow.
They had barely settled in when the elders of the York family made a grand entrance. Even Zachary, whom Serenity had tried to keep out of the loop, dropped everything and rushed back home. The news of Sonny’s illness had spread rapidly, and the little boy became the focal point of everyone’s attention. Calls from Camryn and others flooded in, each inquiring about Sonny’s condition.
Sonny was undoubtedly the cherished baby of several families. When the elderly lady held him in her arms, her face was filled with concern. “Oh, my poor Sonny,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion. “You’ve lost weight due to this illness. Just look at you—your little face isn’t as bright and cheerful, and it’s still flushed from the fever. Seeing you like this hurts more than if someone stabbed my heart.”
Feeling guilty, Sonny looked up at her with his big, innocent eyes. “Great-Grandma, I’m sorry. I was greedy and ate too much fried chicken. It’s my fault.” Despite being the family’s favorite, Sonny was beloved for good reason. He was polite,
Sweet and surprisingly mature for his age, he did his best to comfort the upset old lady, promising her that he would feel better soon. Lilian, observing the scene, leaned over to Serenity and whispered, “When your husband and his siblings were young and sick, did Grandma York fuss over them like this?” Before Serenity could respond, Zachary, who had overheard the question, chimed in, “We never received this kind of treatment.”
Lilian chuckled and sighed. “Grandma York really dotes on Sonny. Just look at her—he still has a slight fever, and she’s already claiming he’s lost weight. The poor kid’s face is still a little red from the fever, yet she’s acting like he’s wasting away.”
Everyone’s laughter helped lighten the atmosphere, but the love and concern in the room were undeniable. Sonny truly was the shining star in their lives.
