Zachary took the breakfast that Jim packed and set it on the dining table. However, he had second thoughts and re-entered the kitchen.
He was preparing hot cocoa for Serenity.
“I thought you made breakfast yourself, but it turns out it was takeout.”
A teasing voice chimed in, and Zachary didn’t need to turn around to know it was his nana; he chose to remain silent.
“What are you making? It smells sweet and chocolaty.”
Grandma May entered the kitchen, uncovered the saucepan, and took a peek.
“I thought you were making progress.”
The old woman muttered, casting a disdainful glance at her grandson before walking away.
Zachary’s handsome face tightened. He couldn’t help but defend himself, saying, “I tried very hard.”
He had an opportunity last night, but fate had other plans.
“You need to pursue the heart first. Didn’t you notice that all of Serenity’s ten fingers are still bare?”
Zachary was at a loss for words.
He had genuinely tried to win her heart.
Long ago, he bought two wedding bands and even wore his ring multiple times, but that was merely to encourage Elisa to move on from him.

“I have a pair of diamond rings that your grandfather bought while he was still alive. We were meant to wear them as a couple, but your grandfather purchased far too many. I can’t wear them all, so I left some in the jewelry vault.”
“They’ll just take up space if I leave them there, so I’ll give them to you. Do whatever you wish with them.”
Grandma May’s jewelry vault was filled with treasures. The diamond ring she always wore was her wedding ring. Although her husband had gifted her many more diamond rings over the years, she still preferred the one she wore on her wedding day.

Zachary knew that the jewelry in his grandmother’s vault surpassed anything found in jewelry stores, as many of the pieces were antique treasures.

Now, it was the grandchildren’s turn, and he was the first to be gifted a diamond ring by his grandmother.

“I’m already old, yet I still worry about your marriage. You’ll disappoint me if you don’t make me a great-grandmother by next year.”
“Even your grandfather found your marriage a headache when he was alive.”
Zachary felt exasperated and thought, ‘Am I really that difficult?’

Grandma May walked to the balcony and shivered in the chilly wind. She quickly retreated inside. “It finally feels like winter in Wiltspoon.”

“Do you think I’m an iron wall that can’t feel pain?” he replied.
“No, I thought I was dreaming, so I pinched you. Now that I’ve heard your cry of pain, I believe this is reality. I slept in your bed again last night.”
Zachary was left speechless.
‘If she suspected she was dreaming, why didn’t she pinch herself instead? She’ll only know she’s not dreaming if she feels the pain herself. Why pinch me so hard?’
