chapter 689
His intention was to gauge Serenity’s reaction. He planned to come clean if she just needed a moment to move past her anger. Now that he understood the delicate balance, Zachary felt torn. He had deceived his wife once, and now he was suffering the consequences. However, he might not be around long enough to fix the mess he created, as she could decide to leave him before that happened.
“Zachary.”
He lowered his gaze to meet hers.
“Aren’t we flying home?”
With a flicker of acknowledgment in his eyes, Zachary nodded.
“Why are you still holding onto me? Let go so I can pack our things to go home.”
Zachary smiled and affectionately kissed her forehead. He teased, “Why do I feel like my wife is more eager to leave than I am?”
“You’re imagining things. I’ve been away for a week. I miss my sister, Sonny, my best friends, and Nana. I can’t wait to get home.”
Serenity pulled out a wad of cash from her pocket, remuneration from Mr. Tank for taking care of Zachary.
“Did you get paid? Did you check if the amount is correct? Make sure they don’t shortchange you,” he urged.
As she counted the money, Serenity said, “I’m homesick.” She had received payment for coming all this way to care for her husband.
“I’ll only receive my wages just before the holidays. Don’t worry; they won’t dock my pay. I was sent by headquarters on a business trip, so it’s paid sick leave,” she reassured him.
Noticing how much fun Serenity was having counting the cash, Zachary remarked, “While you’re counting, are you thinking I should stay in the hospital longer so you could earn more for taking care of me?”
“Yeah—no, I mean, no way! I hope you’re always healthy and free from pain and illness.”
Zachary affectionately tapped her nose before letting her go.
