When the commander of the government army heard Lu Zhanjun’s suggestion, his eyes lit up. “A front feint attack with a side roundabout! This is a brilliant battle plan! Lu Zhanjun really knows what he’s doing!”

What Lu Zhanjun didn’t realize was that his simple tactics impressed the opposing commander because the other side’s military knowledge was surprisingly low. Despite ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, many countries in the region struggle with long-term warfare. Since World War II, military strategies and tactics have evolved significantly. Other parts of the world have learned valuable lessons from that conflict, and even less powerful Southeast Asian nations have improved their military skills. However, the Middle East has not followed suit and remains behind in military training.

Countries like Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq have been in conflict for years, yet their armed forces often rely on guerrilla tactics. The main issue is that, aside from Israel, most Middle Eastern forces lack strong military training. Soldiers are not well-prepared, officers lack leadership skills, and coordination among different units is very poor. Moreover, many times, these large armies crumble at the first sign of pressure.

Take Syria, for example, which has been in constant conflict. Even wealthy nations that have built their military power on oil often waste money on equipment while neglecting other crucial aspects of military readiness.

In Saudi Arabia, the military is mostly equipped with advanced American-style equipment. When facing the Houthi armed forces, they managed to capture M1A2 main battle tanks sold to them by the United States. This earned them the nickname “transportation captain.”

However, the military skills of local leaders are quite concerning, especially in Syria. The commander of the government army, who worked alongside Lu Zhanjun, had no formal military training. He struggled to organize troops and create tactical plans, especially when dealing with large groups.

Even basic coordination for infantry was a plan devised by Lu Zhanjun. The government commanders did not realize they could use infantry artillery because their training in artillery was very poor. They could barely hit targets at close range during practice. If they had to fire in the hills, they wouldn’t even know how to calculate the coordinates.

Fortunately, experts from Lu Zhanjun were skilled in calculations. When they went to fight Hamid, the government army hadn’t even prepared to bring towed artillery. Their soldiers were only proficient with one heavy weapon besides guns: RPG rockets.

RPGs are simple to use. There is no need for surveying, calculations, or coordination with other units. A soldier just puts the launcher on their shoulder, aims, and fires. Even someone who is illiterate can operate it easily.

In contrast, artillery requires a lot of detailed tactical work. Key elements like reconnaissance, calculations, site selection, and coordination are essential for effective offense and defense. For artillery that can fire 20 to 30 kilometers, if the coordinates aren’t calculated correctly, the outcome can be disastrous.

He believed he could defeat the enemy in just one day. So, when he heard Lu Zhanjun’s strategies and tactics, he took them as the standard, even though he didn’t really understand them. But a problem arose. Why should his army pretend to attack? Even if it was just a feint, they still needed to engage the enemy on the front lines, right? Plus, they couldn’t fake an attack from outside the enemy’s range. If they did, it would be obvious to everyone that they were just pretending.
