Two o’clock in the afternoon.

Chen Zhaozhong’s flight landed on time at Hong Kong Island International Airport. As he sat by the window, he felt a mix of emotions.

It had been a long time since he last visited Hong Kong Island. The view outside was both familiar and strange. The only thing he recognized was the traditional Chinese characters plastered everywhere. They reminded him that after 20 years, he was finally back in his hometown.

However, he felt regret. He knew he wouldn’t have the chance to explore Hong Kong Island, the place he had been away from for so long. From the moment he landed, he sensed that his life was changing drastically.

A male flight attendant approached him and said, “Mr. Chen, please wait until all the other passengers have exited the plane. I will personally escort you to Hong Kong Island Customs. I hope you understand.”

Chen Zhaozhong nodded and replied with a slight smile, “Okay, thank you.”

Even though he had been forcibly sent back by the United States, he wasn’t a prisoner. There were no American police or immigration officers accompanying him on the flight.

The U.S. process for deportation involved blacklisting the deportee’s passport. This meant he would be banned from entering the U.S. for five, ten years, or even for life. After completing this process, he was simply put on the return flight.

Once he arrived at the airport, the U.S. Immigration Bureau handed him over to the airline staff, who would then take care of him from there.

After Chen Zhaozhong got off the plane at Hong Kong Island Customs, the repatriation process began.

Once all the passengers had exited, a flight attendant approached Chen Zhaozhong with a polite smile. “Mr. Chen, please come with me,” she said.

“Okay,” he replied with a nod. He stood up and took some of his carry-on luggage from the overhead compartment.

Chen followed the staff member off the plane. After walking across the covered bridge, he spotted two customs officers waiting at the end.

The staff member introduced Chen Zhaozhong to the customs officers, saying, “This is Mr. Chen.”

One officer nodded and said, “Thank you for your work. We’ll handle it from here.” He then turned to Chen and asked, “Are you Mr. Chen Zhaozhong?”

“Yes, that’s me,” Chen confirmed with a slight nod.

“Welcome home, Mr. Chen,” the customs officer said. “Please come with us to the customs area.”

Chen Zhaozhong asked, “What happens next?”

The customs officer explained, “It’s quite simple. You were repatriated from the United States, but you are still a citizen of Hong Kong. We’ve already checked your records, and you have no criminal history here. As a law-abiding citizen, you just need to complete a quick registration with us, and then you can enter freely.”

The officer added, “By the way, you can call your family now to pick you up. We’ll speed up the process, and it should be done in about an hour.”

Chen smiled and said, “That’s not necessary. Please go ahead with the process.”

“Alright,” the officer replied.

The customs officer nodded and said, “Please come with me.”
